BEST HOMEWORK Lesson 1: Introduction to Muggle Studies 100 The challenge: Relate an experience you have had with Pinoy Muggles in the past. What was your impression of Pinoy Muggle Culture? How different did you think Pinoy Muggles were from Pinoy Witches and Wizards? If you were with other magic folk during this experience, how did they react to the Muggles? ======== A MERRY MUGGLE CHRISTMAS by: g3rl_23 | 5th year | hufflepuff Since Christmas is fast approaching, what I'm going to share is my experience with Filipino muggles during christmas holiday. For filipinos , Christmas begins as early as November. During these months, filipinos are already starting to set up their christmas tree and putting christmas decorations. They are installing christmas lights and parols outside their house. Malls are starting to full-up because of early shoppers who are starting to buy gifts for their family, friends and inaanaks. At night, you can hear carolers singing Christmas songs. That's why you can really feel that Christmas is in the air. Christmas is a big event for muggles because not only is it a time for sharing and giving but also a celebration for the birth of Jesus Christ. Filipinos await the birth of Christ by going to Simbang Gabi until the eve of Christmas where they welcome the coming of Christ. There is also Noche buena where Muggles prepare a simple feast for the family to share and of course, the opening of gifts, which the young Muggles enjoy so much. With this experience, I can say that Filipinos are very loving and caring when it comes to their family and they are also very religious. Family and God are very important in their lives. I think, Filipino Muggles are not that different from witches and wizards. Both share the same love they have for their families. They have a strong belief in their magic as Muggles have the same beliefs in God. And during this holiday, both Muggles and witches and wizards show their love and affection to their loved ones by giving gifts and sharing a feast with their family. I'm a half witch half Muggle, my father's a wizard, that is why celebrating christmas with muggles is not new to me. How did magic folks react to this all, we definitely enjoyed this occasion, and for me, it truly is a very merry Muggle Christmas. ======== A MUGGLE EXPERIENCE by: hermione1024 | 1st year | gryffindor Living in the United States does not give one the greatest opportunity to meet a Pinoy Muggle. However, one of my dear friends happened to be a Filipino Muggle. She is a classmate of mine at a Muggle school. I am not Filipino, so it is always interesting to have her in my company. I have met many people, both Muggle or magical, and Filipino or non-Filipino. Though many witches and wizards believe that Muggles, who are not familiar with magic, are as different from themselves as a different species may be, they are far from the truth. In many ways, they are just like us. Muggles are simply fascinating, and they use many things taken for granted by us in place of magic. The Pinoy Muggle culture, from what I could grasp as I live in these United States, is similar to that of a Pinoy witch or wizard. Muggles celebrate the same holidays that we, witches and wizards, do. They use other tools and artifacts in place of magic for their rituals. The fact that they can do nearly everything a witch or wizard can do yet not require the use of magic is intriguing. I am sure that we would not be able to manage as well without our wands and broomsticks as they do. My muggle friend and I were waiting together one cold night for our ride home. My first impression was that we would both have to wait for a long time, especially since I, an underage witch with a muggle present, was not allowed to use magic. My friend, however, took from her backpack a certain little device that helped us both. She called it a cell-phone, a tool that helped her communicate with anyone else who had a similar device. Astonished, I listened as my friend told me with an amused look exactly how to use a cell-phone. It is just like those things Muggles call felly-tones or telephones, I do not remember. From that experience, and many others, it seemed obvious to me that Muggles live very well without the use of magic. They can do nearly everything we do, but with different tools. It is amazing how much they know and can accomplish without the use of magic! ======== by: hayhay | 5th year | ravenclaw How the muggles get by daily in their lives was never a fascination to me. I've been with them for almost half of my life until I received an owl a few years ago telling me that I'd become a student in Hogwarts Philippines School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was a terrifying moment. Witchcraft was a taboo in our family, in the culture I grew up with, in the country that was fervent devout Christians. But then again, it was something new to us, to me. I always dream of a world different from this world controlled by technology and science. And here it was, in this piece of parchment, were my wildest dreams about to come true. Eventually, my family agreed to allow me to continue my studies in Hogwarts Philippines. And soon, they have accepted me as someone who is really special. A witch's life is so easy, just by flicking my wands do I get the stuff I really need or want. As I merge my two lives together, only then did I realize how great are the minds of the muggles. Everyday, I always ride the MRT to go to my muggle school. One time, I was in a hurry because I'd be late for my first class. When I reached the counter, I cursed under my breath. There was a long line of people waiting to buy their tickets. I was like "aaarrrggghhh! This can't be happening!" I so wanted to use magic at that very moment but I know it's not a matter of life or death. I just couldn't risk getting expelled. So like a good and responsible citizen, I fell in line and waited for my turn. I didn't wait for that long. In 10 minutes, I was inside the train. It made me think that muggles are not so different from us wizards/witches. They're just like us, minus the magic. But with their cleverness, I don't think they will need magic at all. ======== A MUGGLE ENCOUNTER by: twizted_jinx | 1st year | gryffindor I have been mingling with other muggles for the past fourteen years, since I have been going to a muggle school. What I have noticed about them is the way they do things. Instead of using magic to get a hold of anything like for some instances, cooking, repairing objects or getting things, they use it manually, meaning without the use of magic. Thus in muggle school, obviously they do not teach magic. But some of the subjects they offer are most likely similar as to what of a wizards’ school. They teach chemistry, physics, botany as to which are the counterparts of potions, arithmancy and herbology. The only difference is that there is no magic involved to transform anyone or anything. I have also noticed that these muggles use as to what they call "technology" in school. This technology they have makes everything fast and instant. They use computers in Muggle School to organize everything from financial accounts of each student enrolled, class schedules, course offerings to surfing the ‘cyber space’. They say that this technology they have gives a lot of comfort in every routine they have in school, especially in handing out home works or submitting it to the professor via e-mail, also know as the electronic mail. During this kind of experience I have had with them, I realize that these muggles do not take anything for granted at all. They put it into good use, not only to help themselves but to help others as well. The difference between Pinoy wizards and witches from Pinoy muggles is that Pinoy wizards and witches are easily distinguished by the muggles. Most of them. It may be probably because Pinoy wizards and witches act differently from Muggles. Nevertheless Pinoy wizards and witched tends to get away from the big crowd and prefers to be alone somewhere. If I were with other magic folk during this muggle experience, I would guess that they would also have the same reactions as mine. Fascinated with muggles because even without the use and knowledge of magic, they can help themselves and live life. |
