Lesson 1: Introduction to Muggle Studies 100 Welcome to Muggle Studies 100, dear witches and wizards of Hogwarts Philippines. I hope you all have read our class policies. Please make sure you understand them well. Any questions about them should be raised at once in our Classroom. Now that we've got that out of the way, let us start our discussion on Muggles. You all know what Muggles are. Some of you here may even be half-Muggle, or both parents may even be Muggles. Or maybe some of your relatives are Muggles. But regardless of your background, please remember that in this class, we will be discussing Muggles from the wizarding viewpoint. Muggles are just like all of us. They are human too. The only difference is the magic. And like us, Muggles live and get by with what is given them. They may not have magic, but you will soon find that their lives are fascinating nonetheless. What we take for granted, Muggles seem to have put to good use. The most fascinating aspect of Pinoy Muggles have to be their culture. Having been colonized by several countries throughout their long history, Pinoy Muggle culture is a jolly mixture of Spanish, American, and Asian customs and beliefs. In our next lessons, we will learn more about Pinoy Muggle Culture and how magic figures (or does not figure) in it. In the process I am hoping that we will also learn new insights about our own culture. HOMEWORK 1: A Muggle Experience DATE DUE - On or before Sunday, 7 December 2003 Using a minimum of 15 sentences, relate to us an experience you have had with Pinoy Muggles in the past, and in the process, answer these questions: During this experience, what was your impression of Pinoy Muggle Culture? How different did you think Pinoy Muggles were from Pinoy Witches and Wizards? If you were with other magic folk during this experience, how did they react to the Muggles? You may write about any experience at all, as long as it was one shared with a Muggle. For example, you may tell us about the time you spent summer vacation with the family of one of your Muggle-born classmates, or the time you went shopping in a Muggle grocery store, or rode the Muggle bus or MRT, etc. We will not follow the "Beater and Chaser" format for this homework since I would just like to know the extent of your Muggle experiences and your reactions during these experiences. I am alloting roughly 2 weeks for this assignment, since it is only a short one. The 3 best essays for this month will earn an extra 100 house points each and will be featured in our Best Homeworks page. |
