The Adventures of Paisley Blue

Things have been hopping the last several days.

Last Monday, the 23rd, I took Mechanic to the ER and he ended up getting admitted. It was a very long day - we parked at the hospital at 8:42 am and I left the hospital at 10:15 pm. It was even longer for him, I'm sure, though.

On the 21st I had taken him to the same ER and they had given him antibiotics and antinausea meds, told him to drink lots of fluids, and sent him home. When I took him in on Monday, he was severely dehydrated. They gave him lots of IV fluids that day.

The big problem - in my nonprofessional opinion - was the fever he had endured non-stop. That morning it had spiked above 103 and he agreed to go to the hospital. He absolutely hates going to the doctor, so when he agreed I knew he wasn't feeling good.

They tested him in so many ways... drew so much blood... but never figured out what was really wrong. So Friday afternoon they released him. They sent him home on antibiotics, antinausea meds, and acetiminophen. Sound familiar? I guess we'll see what happens, and if he gets those high fevers again, I reckon we'll be going back to the ER.

To me the shocking thing was who did and who did not come to visit him while he was in the hospital. I was there everyday after work, and we talked frequently throughout the day. When I left he always told me to call when I got home so he'd know I got home safely, which I did.

Michael showed up once, for about ten minutes. Mechanic's father visited him once and called him a couple times, which was cool. This event seems to have put them back in touch, which I think is probably a good thing. And Rainbow came to see him.

Now I understand that people have a hard time with hospitals, and people have busy lives, and all that. Still, there are people who I thought would have visited him, and I suspect Mechanic feels the same way. We talked about that for a few minutes today. I think it meant a lot to him that Rainbow came to see him. He told me earlier that my visits helped, gave him someone to talk with... and I know I helped in making sure that he got better care than he would have if I had not been there. The nurses I spoke with assured me of this, and that encouraged me.

He had some good nurses but I think his doctors left a little to be desired. Since its a teaching hospital, groups of student doctors were brought around to see him, while his symptoms and treatment were discussed in front of him. I know how that feels... like you're not even there.

So now Mechanic has been home for a whole day and he is running a low grade fever. He is eating, especially now that he can have foods that taste good to him, as compared to hospital food. He has taken several baths which make him feel better, has played on the computer, and watched television. He still feels bad, though, so he's taking it easy. He told me this evening that he did not even have the energy to walk across the street to the store... that he needs me...

I like being needed. I just wish he felt better... I keep praying for him.

Today I spent four hours or so walking around Capital Hill and looking for a new apartment. We want a real apartment so much... we have some obstacles, and we have some things we are definitely looking for such as parking. However, I am optimistic that we will find something.

This evening I watched "Like Water For Chocolate" on cable. It was the first time I'd ever seen it dubbed in English rather than subtitled. Mechanic was making fun of the dialogue at certain points, especially towards the end. We laughed quite a bit over some of it... but overall, the movie still touched me as much as it always has.

When I have a real kitchen, I want the cookbook that goes with that movie. I so much want to try some of those recipes. I want to try the quail in rose petal sauce, made with love.

Well, it's late and I'm tired... good nite.
