The Adventures of Paisley Blue

Happy Valentine's Day!

This morning I went to work for the first time in almost two weeks. I had a hard time waking up but Opera helped me. It felt good going to the office, though, despite the fact that I had over 300 emails waiting for me.

One of the first things that happened is the SARC Committee (Staff Activities and Recognition) distributed little valentine's and a Dilletante chocolate sucker to all employees. A little while later they delivered valentines to people. Apparently while I was out they ran a little thing where you could pay $2 to have the SARC folks deliver a valentine and a rose to someone... and I was a recipient. That was way cool.

It was from one of the gals in Accounting and the message read, "Thanks for all the help you've given me during the year, especially with my computer." She is always doing nice little things like this for me.

One amusing thing I noticed immediately is that most of the people on my team were not in or only working half days. Both bosses were out. Yet two people who were supposed to be off came in and worked for a couple hours. Those who saw me were surprised that I came in on a Friday, though. We have a three-day weekend coming up with Presidents Day, and I was told that they really had not expected to see me until Tuesday.

They really missed me. I am the only one who can process the invoices for our team, so the bills have not been paid in my absence. I was told that my team had approached everyone else in the building to see if anyone else could do it, and turns out that no one could. I joked with one of my coworkers that this was job security for me. However, I know that I will need to train somebody to do this because you never know... and its better to have a backup.

This was also the first week of the new paycheck distribution process. In the past you could either get your check directly deposited into a bank account or you could go to Human Resources and pick up your check. It was decided that having the paychecks available in HR was too time consuming, so now if you do not get direct deposit, they send your check out in the mail. Before I even went to work I went to the post office to see if my check was there. Thankfully, it was.

This afternoon Michael and Mechanic picked me up from work and we ran a few errands. Tomorrow is the Coronation Ball and there were a few errands that needed to be run. They had just come from getting haircuts. I love it when they get it buzzed because then their heads feel fuzzy. We picked up Michael's wig and we also stopped by his bar so he could finish a little business there.

Michael has a beautiful purple sequined gown to wear to the ball. I am going to be wearing my floor-length black dress but I need to find a wrap or something to go over it. Everyone will be decked out in their finery, and all the girls will be wearing their big, flashy jewels.

Of course later in the evening was Michael's karaoke show. There were not a lot of singers there so I got to sing quite a bit. Towards the end of the evening I sat and talked with an interesting young man who is strongly identified and identifies with his Native American heritage. He recently completed a move from Capital Hill to the downtown area. Now he lives three blocks from the bar - he said he will have to wait and see whether or not that's a good thing.

He began looking at my palm, saying he used to read palms quite a bit in the past. This was just out of curiosity. He said that he saw that I am very intelligent, that the gods made me special for a reason - that I have some special purpose in life. He said I have a very long life line and overall my hand is very clear and pure, just like my soul.

I just had to ask whether my hand showed any love interest coming into my life or anything like that. He said it showed that I was wonderful with children but did not see anything pertaining to a husband or children in my life right now. However, it also did not show impending heartbreak which is always good news. Over and over, though, he kept saying how beautiful and special I am.

Well, that was a nice thing to hear. What girl wouldn't want to sit and hear something as nice as that?

During the day I had gone to a store and picked up cards and gifts for the people I'm close to. Michael and Mechanic both received a card from me, and I gave them and Opera a gift. The guys gave me a precious and funny card that I adore, and its even more special because its signed by both of them with love.

Another Valentine's Day, but I'm not anyone's special valentine. *sigh* That's okay. I have wonderful friends who love me and that is worth quite a bit in this cold & lonely world.
