Wangaratta 1863 - 1871

The next appearance in the Wangaratta Petty Sessions court may or may not have been Henry. His relative, Francis, did not seem to have had a farm at this stage although he was living in Wangaratta at this time, so I assume that it was Henry.

      23rd January 1863
      Police V Ponchard
Charge of allowing a cow to wander
Fined 10 Shillings with 5 Shillings costs, in default 7 days.

The 7th child, Mary Jane Ponchard, was born on the 13th of April 1863, in Wangaratta. She was followed by the 8th, Patrick Ponchard, on the 7th of April 1865. He was Baptised at St Patrick's on May 13, 1865 and it is interesting to note that the Godparents listed in this reference were "Frank and Mary Anne Ponchard" who were the eldest children of Henry's brother Francis Ponchard. Unfortunately Patrick did not live very long and died in January 1866, with his burial taking place on the 22nd of January 1866, in the Catholic Section of Wangaratta Cemetery.

The "Ovens & Murray Advertiser" dated Thursday, March 24, 1864 reports on the sale of a portion of land in the Township of Wangaratta as follows -

"The property and ground, formerly belonging to Mr Henry Ponchard, adjoining the Roman Catholic Church property, was purchased by private contract a few days ago by the Rev. Mr Tierney for the Roman Catholics of this place for the sum of £ 400. This tells well for the energy displayed by the Rev. gentleman on behalf of the body which he represents."

A publication produced in 1927 by the Editor of The Wangaratta Dispatch, entitled "Wangaratta 1838-1927 Illustrated History of the Town & District" contains the following on page 50-

"More commodious premises were secured for the parish priest by the purchase for £ 360 of Mrs. Ponchard's residence, which occupied portion of the allotment where now (1927) stands the Brigidine Convent, and which was replaced during the residence of Very Rev. Dean Murphy, by the present substantial presbytery."

The "Ovens & Murray Advertiser" dated Thursday, May 26, 1864 lists a case that appears to have been related to the above sale of property. It was as follows -

      "Wangaratta Police Court
(before Mr Shadforth P.M., Mr Evans J.P., Mr Dobbyn J.P.)
      Monday 23 May 1864
      Debts - A. C. Bayley   V   H. Parchard, claim £14/10/- for commission on property
placed in his hands for sale.
      Case dismissed."

The 9th, and final, child of Henry and Elizabeth was also named Patrick. He was born in Wangaratta on the 20th of December 1866 and was baptised at St. Patrick's on April 24, 1867. The Godparents this time were "Michael Reilly and Kate Ponchard", Michael Reilly was the elder brother of Henry's wife and Kate Ponchard was the 3rd child of Henry and Elizabeth.

Henry Ponchard was listed three times more in the listings of the Wangaratta Court of Petty Sessions. The first was :-

      5th June 1867
      Complainant - Police
      Defendant - Henry Ponchard
      Cause - Drunk and Disorderly.
Decision - Fined 5 shillings in default 6 hour's imprisonment.

      The second was :-

      Decision - Case dismissed.

And the final reference was :-

      Cause - Breach of 28 Vic 2650.1633.11
Decision - Fined 2/6 in default Distress.
