Henry Ponchard died on the 11th of June 1872, at his farm at Three Mile Creek, Wangaratta, after an illness that had lasted 7 months. The official cause of death recorded on his certificate is "Paralysis". He was buried at the Wangaratta Cemetery on the 13 of June, 1872. In his Will he left all of his possessions to his wife, Elizabeth, and probate on the will was finally granted on the 22nd of October 1874. The total value of his estate, after the settling of debts and mortgages on some of the land, was £510. This was a very good amount of money at this time although the bulk of the value of the estate was in land, a total of well over 135 Acres of land in total. It appears that Elizabeth Ponchard (nee Reilly) remained in Wangaratta at least until 1879 as she appears as a defendant in the Petty Sessions Court on the 6/10/1879, as follows :-
Complainant - William Meldrum
Defendant - Elizabeth Ponchard
Cause - Goods valued at £19/19/10.
Decision - No appearance. Struck out.Elizabeth Ponchard next appears as the witness to the birth of John Ponchard's (her eldest son) second child, John, in Jerilderie on the 19th of January 1888, as Mrs E. Ponchard. She also may have been the witness on his first child's birth as the witness is listed as Mrs Reilly. John was working as a track ganger or "fettler" with the railways in New South Wales. In fact, the place of birth of the second child is given as "Railway line, Jerilderie".
Elizabeth died in Junee, New South Wales, on the 16th of August 1888. She was still living with her eldest son, John, and he is the informant on her death certificate. Her eventual cause of death was Pneumonia which she had been suffering from for a period of 5 days. She was buried on the 17th of August 1888 at the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Junee Junction.
