Dr. Rod DDS Sign

Dr. Rod DDS Sign

This was a project I designed for a co-worker. He has a friend who is a dentist, who give's him free dental work. But he always feels guilty about not paying him anything. Each time he get's work done he give's him a gift of some kind. The dentists name is Dr. Rod. He smokes cigars... The usual gift is wine, cigars, or artwork of some kind. He chose this, and he chose wisely.

I wanted it to look professional and yet silly and whimsical at the same time. It also had to be personalized. I chose Uroboros red for the letters, it's a rich clear with some natural texture. The background is made from Spectrum's clear Baroque. The swirls give it an overall flow, and it helps the antique letters stand out better. I let the swirls go random, instead of cutting into one solid sheet. Which was very wise, since I cracked it on the way over, and was able to fix it without anyone know where it was done.

Dr Rod Close Up - Tooth

The tooth wears a crown (get it play on words), holds a tooth brush like royalty and wears sneakers (he can't go bare rooted can he?) But the most important detail is the cigar in his grinning white smile. The cigar is important because the guy smokes cigars. The cigar sticks out from the window about 1/2", anymore and it break off (or kill someone). The cigar is made from an 1/8" brass rod, cut and "torpedoed" in a lathe. One end was blunted, the other left pointy, that end was soldered to the mouth (overlay glued). The whole thing was painted with Deka glass paints, blending in color and dappling the paint as I went.

I seemed to have lost the original paper work for this project, but here's the stats as I remember them:
