Earth 911

Earth 911 Panel

A co-worker bought this from me. It was for a gift for her sister in Pennsylvania. Her store is called Earth 911. From what I know, they sell recycled products to help the earth. I was told that she didn't have an actual sign;just the card with the symbol on it.

This project allowed me to finally use my Taurus II Ring-Saw for the first time on a real project. Before I just cut up scrap. I used it in the #1's, parts of the land, and parts of the water. I could have made more complex cuts on it, but I didn't for 2 reasons:

  1. The glass could have cracked there in the future due to panel flexing.
  2. I didn't have enough glass to cover that area.

Designing it was harder then I thought. The original card has a symbol on it that's about an inch wide. The finished project is much larger then that. I had to scan the card in with my scanner, blow it up and remove the stuff I didn't need like extra lines and thickened graphics.

I then had to set up the opaque projector and trace it from across the room. I drew a perfect circle on my paper with a beam compass. This way I knew I'd have a perfect circle. What I found out was, that the picture on the card wasn't a perfect circle. It looked round, but I guess it was hand drawn. So I had to reduce and expand certain areas. Then modify the design to fit in the new circle.

The glass used was picked out by my client, though the actual sample were picked out by me. The ocean is Spectrum clear Baroque. I didn't want any color there or it might be too distracting to look at, and the land areas may have blended in. I tried to use the swirls to give the a water flow pattern around the land. The swirls also allowed me to give the panel a more spherical look by the placement of the swirls.

The land is also Spectrum, simple aqua-blue, with a granite texture. It matched the card pretty well, and gives the piece a sparkle. The "zoom" is a clear with blue wispy/granite, from Wissmach. Originally I wanted to use white Baroque to give it that "jumped out" appearance, but I didn't have any.

The entire thing is wrapped with 3/8" foil around the border, and then I beaded it. It would have been difficult to wrap came around it because of the numbers. The panel hangs so that South America points downward. To take the photograph, the panel balanced better in this position.
