To a dear, dear co-worker,

Microwave Madness;
An Ode to Mattie's Hairpiece

She wasn't drunk, nor had she been drinking,
Hurried was she, she just wasn't thinking.

Her hairpiece was wet, with no time to dry,
The oven looked tempting; but, she passed it by.

On to the microwave, she placed it inside,
She was in a frenzy, 'cause her hair wasn't dried.

To put on her makeup, she moved with such flair,
Now hopeless and frantic, she'd blown up her hair.

Now in her kitchen, alone there she stood,
She'd just gotten ready, but her hair was no good.

The event wasn't funny, at least at the time,
The hairpiece she'd toasted, had turned into slime.

There is a moral to this short comic verse,
No matter how bad, things can always get worse.

Mattie was a lady I worked side by side with for several years, she never left the house with out her hairpiece. One day she was running a little behind and her hairpiece was still wet as she got ready for work. She knew there wasn't time to use the conventional method of drying her hair, so hurriedly she resorted to using the microwave oven, as it seemed the quickest method at the time. Consequently, the metal pins that held the hairpiece in place upon it's temporary resting place, reacted violently in the microwave and nearly blew her kitchen into oblivion. Needless to say the resulting explosion and fire prevented her from making it to work that day. The ordeal wasn't very funny at the time, but now we all laugh at the event whenever it comes up. She has the original copy of the poem, written on a paper napkin, mounted and displayed on her hearth for all to see. The poem was written around 01:30 am on August 11, 1194, one week after the incident. I was on vacation at the time and missed her grand entrance without a hairpiece, no one recognized her. I felt compelled to contribute to her embarrassment by writing the poem as a joke. She shares it everyone that enters her house and tells them the story behind her brand spanky new kitchen. Love ya, Mattie Pearl, Thanks for the memories and putting up with me for those few years we worked side by side.
