To P...

You are the peepul
by the roadside
under whose shade
many come to sit
eat
drink
and rest.

Some come to worship
with chandan
and offerings of
flower and water.

If this water
of offerings
and that spilled over
from someone’s drinking
is not there to sustain you,
you slowly start dying
little by little
leaf by leaf.

A cactus may live,
but you shrivel up
and die.
