Sassy had a feeling this was going to be a bad day when she got up from her nap, but she never expected it to be THIS bad! Oh no, she thought. This is MY family and I don't want to share it! You see Sassy was a cat, and a cat of many years, and as cats usually do, she felt she ruled the house.
Trixie, the cute little puppy, was thinking something quite different. Wow! This is exciting! A new family, and they have another pet too. I can't wait to play with her!
Trixie ran over to Sassy and nipped at her tail, hoping to get her to wrestle. But Sassy wasn't young and playful anymore, and just found the puppy to be a nuisance. She made this clear by swatting Trixie in the face, not once, but three times! It didn't really hurt Trixie. It just hurt her feelings.
Trixie walked away, hanging her head. She was sad and confused. Why doesn't Sassylike me, she thought to herself. There must be some way to make her like me. We can't be enemies forever! Why just because you're different doesn't mean we have to hate each other.
While Trixie was thinking things over, something terrible happened! Sassy was trying to go outside, when the door closed on her tail! "Meow!" screached Sassy. "Meow! It hurts!" She cried again.
Oh no, thought Trixie. I've got to do something! Just then Trixie got an idea. As loud as she possibly could, she barked! And she kept right on barking until her Master came to see what all the noise and fuss was all about.
After their Master freed Sassy from the door, she went over to Trixie and thanked him. "If you hadn't barked like you did I would still be stuck in that door. It was very painful." she said.
"Thank you," said Trixie, "but it was really nothing." "That's not true," said Sassy. "I treated you very mean, just because you were different from me. I learned a very valuable lesson today, all because of you."
Trixie felt very proud as she walked to her water dish for a drink. Sassy stood by reminding herself that sometimes even "old folks" can learn from the young. "Come on little pup," said Sassy, "Let's see if you can catch and old kitty cat." And the two of them became good friends from that day on.
