That Night You Should Have Been Born
By Becky
(C) November 23, 1998
(Donnie)
I remember that night you should have been born
It was New Year's Eve, well into the new morn
We'd had a party to celebrate the old year
Your Daddy glowing so full of beer cheer
The idiots had been trying, most of the night
To get me to push, give birth, that you might
Be a deduction for taxes, by twelve if you came
With the clock striking, I gave up the game
I was so tired and had gone up to bed
Daddy joined me, we laid down our heads
I was getting comfy though it took me awhile
With my belly extended ten pillows I did pile
Now Daddy was about three sheets to the wind
He tossed and turned, all of a sudden when
Voice slurred, he asked a question that curled
My hair and toes, made my senses then whirl
Please tell me darling, do you see what I see
Am I drunk, or is that a bat looking at me
Peeking over the cover, eyes huge with fear
At the top of the drapes I then saw it so clear
Lord! that was a bat hanging upside down
I covered my head and let out a loud sound
You could hear me screaming I know for a mile
I kept on yelling and screaming, all the while
Dear Daddy all tangled in blankets and sheets
Was trying his best to just get on his feet
That was a picture, you would love to this day
Not a stitch on, as he searched for a way
To get that darn bat while keeping me calm
I feared it would take nothing short of a bomb
He chased that stupid bat all over the place
Upstairs, downstairs he kept up the pace
The bat first flew this way, then he flew that
Dad tried to catch him with an old baseball hat
A towel was found, though not to cover dear Dad
He threw it over the bat and boy was I glad
I now could relax but then I started to think
Were there more skulking and ready to sink
Their fangs in my throat to drink my blood dry
I sat down on the floor and started to cry
He yelled up the stairs, call out the MPs
Stop that caterwauling, soon if you please
I called the Police, they came on the run
Dad greeted them, no clothes to cover his buns
Their shoulders shaking, the laughter began
It just kept growing, till they could not stand
I made us coffee, nothing added for cheer
I tried to tell them to make myself clear
This is not funny with the condition I'm in now
All this weight makes me feel like a great cow
My Baby is now due I say with disdain
It does no good, they start laughing again
My dear Son, avoided this might have been
Had you appeared, there'd have been no scene
After twenty-nine years, I still have no clue
How that bat arrived that night, instead of you.
