My sci-fi musical, The Library
at Marianat, has been on the Internet for some
months now, but all of the songs
are completely indigenous to the script
and would make little sense
if taken out of context. So what I've done
here is to excerpt the main
romantic ballad and give it a new set of
very topical lyrics. (I
usually try to steer away from topical lyrics because
before you know it, they have
dated.) Although this is not the way it is in the show,
I hope you will still find time
to read the entire book by clicking on the campfire
below. It all takes place
centuries in the future and features such commonplace
things as crazed religious leaders,
incompetent archeologists and Killer Pandas,
but it is basically a satire
(and, I hope, a very funny one) of our world today.
As Long As There's You
The grass has never looked so green before,
The sky has never looked so blue;
I have never seen before
A girl as lovely and as special as you.Let the stars fall in the seas,
Let utilities jack up their fees---
What do I care?
As long as there's you.Let the sun rise in the west,
Let women grow hair on their chest---
What do I care?
As long as there's you.All at once
I don't mind if every airline
Doesn't meet our basic needs---
All at once
I don't care about my hairline
And if it recedes.I only know for what it is worth
Let ego inherit the earth---
What do I care?
What do I care?
As long as there's you.
II
Let champagne all become flat,
Let my yogurt contain only fat---
What do I care?
As long as there's you.Let the news get more morose---
Let wit be replaced by what's gross,
What do I care?
As long as there's you.I don't mind
If great scribes like Poe and Whitman
Are no longer being read;
I don't mind
If they make heroes out of hit men
While good guys drop dead.I only know for what it is worth
If class disappears from the earth,
What do I care?
What do I care?
As long as there's you.
