I've Got to Tell You

You can go through life with so much circumspection,
You cannot call it living at all;
I have always had such a fear of rejection
You can say I’ve been “standing small”.
But this is something I won’t repent---
How can you repent the truth?
If up till now I’ve been Clark Kent,
I’ve just emerged from the telephone booth.

I’ve got to tell you,
The hell with my pride!
I simply must tell you
What I’m feeling inside.
I tell you I love you
And that you come first---
If I don’t let it out now,
I’m going to burst!
I can’t continue through life
With a timid smile
And a furrowed brow;
I’ve got to tell you,
Tell you I love you—
And that’s what I’m doing right now.

I don’t care if you call me a sap
Or if you prefer to stay mute;
If Romeo had never opened his trap,
He would have lived to be a boring old coot.

I’ve got to tell you,
The hell with my pride!
I simply must tell you
What I’m feeling inside.
I tell you I love you
And that you come first---
If I don’t let it out now,
I’m going to burst!
I can’t continue through life
With a timid smile
And a furrowed brow;
I’ve got to tell you,
Tell you I love you—
And that’s what I’m doing right now.
