If My Heart Could Only Speak
How can I phrase
What I feel deep inside?
Poets find ways,
But I couldn't if I tried.
Just plain "I love you"
Sounds tired and trite---
And I'm not sure that
Just plain "I love you" is right.

If my heart could only speak,
How it would talk
Of the way you look and laugh and smile and walk!
And if wise men could hear it
They would claim it was smart
That my heart had taken you to heart.

If my heart could only write,
What it would say!
It would make the Brownings almost sound cliché---
And if Byron could read it,
He would swear from the start
That my heart was writing from the heart.

And if it composed a symphony,
It would be an immediate sensation;
No composer could excel,
For Mozart, Schubert and Ravel
Never had such a perfect inspiration.

If my heart could only speak
The way I feel,
It would voice those unsaid things my eyes reveal,
And if lovers could hear it
They would know it was true
That my heart was heart-sick over you.
