There You Were

It was an ordinary party---
One is like another---
Where all the conversation
Goes in one ear and out the other.
It was an ordinary party
With the usual social mix---
I've thought about it often,
But memory plays funny tricks.

I can't recall just what I saw,
Who you were with
Or what you wore,
But there you were.

I don't remember who smiled first
Or if I spilled
The drink I nursed,
But there you were.

All at once the room was out of focus,
Everything kind of moved about and swirled---
And something in our souls awoke us
To a new and different world.

I do recall a slight perfume
And how a glow
Came in the room
And lingered for the two of us to see---
For there you were,
There you were---
And you were there for me.
