Singing Their Own Songs

Pete Seeger was the master of ceremonies. The Broadside contingent, with the unscheduled Matthew Jones, performed two songs each before the intermission. The Star Spangled String Band was a traditional string band; Tim Buckley played electric guitar with a rhythm section; the rest of us were singer-guitarists.

Friends brought me (Thom Parrott) a bouquet of yellow mums before the concert began. By the time we went on, each of the performers had a yellow flower in their buttonhole or hair or the head of their guitar.

During intermission, Folkways Records owner Moses Asch came up to me, introduced himself and said "I want you on my record label." We subsequently produced two LPs and a single which were issued on Folkways-Scholastic Records. I was told that my first LP was the first full color cover in Folkways history and sold more copies in its first year than any Folkways LP to that time (excluding, of course, the Verve-Folkways recordings). The single was, so far as I know, the only (true) Folkways single.

At the Carnegie Hall concert, I sang "Hole In The Ground" and "Freedoms We've Been Fighting For." Lyrics to these songs and others I wrote which were printed in Broadside Magazine or included on my two Folkways LPs are included on their own page.

Mentioned briefly in the biography:
Making People's Music
MAKING PEOPLE'S MUSIC: MOE ASCH and FOLKWAYS RECORDS by Peter D. Goldsmith.

The first edition erroneously says Tom's LPs were "vanity records" -- in fact, Moe saw Tom at Carnegie Hall, invited him to record on Folkways and paid him to do so -- later editions were corrected. The Smithsonian has a brief review of this book.
