SHOVE YOUR DRESS CODE

You can't wear no sneakers. Can't wear no chains.
You can't wear no jeans unless they got a big name.
No Harley buckles. No black tee shirts.
No tears. No patches. No slogans. No dirt.
You can shove your dress code. Shove your dress code.
You can shove your dress code clear on out of sight.
We understand you've got a business to run,
But if you weren't so tense you'd have a lot more fun.
Back in the Sixties we read you our rights,
But if you need another lesson, we're ready to fight, and
You can shove your dress code. Shove your dress code.
You can shove your dress code clear on out of sight.
VERNON McCALL

Vernon McCall lived in an old trailer
On land that his father had owned there for years
But the Forestry Service changed all the boundaries
Saying "Vernon move out, we want the land clear."
Vernon McCall was away doing odd jobs
When Danny Hile came with a tractor and gear
And dug a big hole and buried the trailer
Saying "Vernon move out, we want the land clear.
Vernon had things that were left from his mother
And from his two brothers who had died the last year
But they were all buried by the government tractor
With its "Vernon move out, we want the land clear.
Vernon McCall, he took his loss badly
He was bad to the whisky, his mind wasn't clear
One night he fell down and passed out in the highway
With "Vernon, move out" ringing loud in his ears.
The car came a-driving the dark curving roadway
Saw Vernon too late there even to veer
Now Vernon lies buried and free from the taunting
Of "Vernon, move out, we want the land clear."
THE UPPERS AND THE DOWNERS BLUES

Somewhere in that body is one of the God's great souls,
But since you got back to poppin' pills, it hardly ever shows.
All the friends you left behind are prayin' hard for you,
Cause you gave the folks who love you one bad case of the uppers and the downers blues.
The uppers and the downers blues.
The uppers and the downers blues.
You gave the folks who love you one bad case
Of the uppers and the downers blues.
All the words you said to me that made me want to walk,
I know it wasn't you, girl, it was the pills I was hearin' talk.
And I'd have got you out of my mind a long time ago, its true,
But you gave me such a bad case of the uppers and the downers blues.
The uppers and the downers blues.
The uppers and the downers blues.
I never knew that it could be so hard to lose...
The uppers and the downers blues.
I NEVER DREAMED

The wedding song I wrote for you, it was only yesterday.
It seemed to make you happy then, but now you've gone away.
The man who took you out of here has strangled up your mind.
But think about the gentle love of him you left behind.
I'll survive, I have before, but may the Gods forbid again,
And I will try, as you have asked, to simply be your friend.
I cannot say that I will wait forever for you dear,
But if I wait a day or two you know I'll wait a year.
It was on the Eve of Candlemas, when each alone must stand,
We burn the past, we start anew, we learn to live with pain.
Ah, Becky, darling, Evenstar, you're the first glow in my sky.
I never dreamed, when I awoke with you, that you could make me cry.
NEW HEARTACHE

I'm working on a new heartache, baby don't you refuse.
You got a lot of what it will take to give me a bad case of the blues.
I'm working on a new heartache. I'm working on a new heartache. I'm working on a new heartache.
I'm working on a new heartache, baby won't you come over here.
You can give me your emotional outtakes but you better not get too near.
I'm working on a new heartache. I'm working on a new heartache. I'm working on a new heartache.
I'm working on a new heartache, baby please don't you refuse.
You got a lot of what it will take to give me a beautiful case of the blues.
I'm gonna write a lot of songs about you, baby, when you're gone.
I'm working on a new heartache. I'm working on a new heartache. I'm working on a new heartache.
STEEL STRING QUEEN

So if you catch me looking lonely, girl, I'm sorry
Please believe its nothing that you lack
If you catch me looking lonely, girl, I'm sorry
But the need to sing and my steel string queen will always call me back.
If lovers are the ones who take you just the way you are
Then I have never known a love as true as my guitar
She has the patience of a saint, the stature of a queen
And what my fingers give to her, her strings return to me.
So if you catch me looking lonely, girl, I'm sorry
Please believe its nothing that you lack
If you catch me looking lonely, girl, I'm sorry
But the need to sing and my steel string queen will always call me back.
HIPPY TIME

I'll be back in an hour I told them a five
About seven-thirty I finally arrived
But nobody got tense, nobody was sore
Cause they'd been on hippy time since their feet hit the floor.
Hippy time. Hippy time. Hippy time.
If the words that I'm saying don't make any sense
Just think of a clock as a kind of a fence
Cutting off pieces of the life you would lead
If you want your freedom try singing with me:
Hippy time. Hippy time. Hippy time.
If you've got a minute I could tell you some more
She said come on in so I passed thru her door
Late the next morning when she opened her eyes
Said "That was a hell of a minute" I said "Are you really surprised."
Hippy time. Hippy time. Hippy time.
Cabin said Thom "Let's go for a walk"
Its such a nice day, maybe go for a walk
So we strolled across Central and we rolled up some smoke
And for a couple of hours we just swapped songs and toked.
Hippy time. Hippy time. Hippy time.
