2ND MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY AT
GETTYSBURG

Prelude to the Battle

For the officers & men of the 2nd Massachusetts, the battle of Brandy Station on 9 June helped remove the stigma of the debacle at Chancellorsville. Many of them, however, were still disenchanted with Joe Hooker, as was President Lincoln, who appointed MG George G. Meade to the command of the Army of the Potomac on June 28th. By this time, Lee's Army of Nothern Virginia was well into its invasion of Pennsylvania, leaving Meade with little time to concentrate his forces and formulate his strategy.

As the two armies marched toward each other, the 2nd Massachusetts was still under the command of Lt.-Col. Charles Mudge. Col. William Cogswell, who had assumed command after Col. Quincy's resignation, had not yet recoverd from his Chancellorsville wound.
