Local and State Maritime Law Enforcement
AGENCIES WITH MARINE UNITS
- VERMONT STATE POLICE
- The Vermont State Police have many marine units on Lake Champlain during the boating season, stationed throughout the region at such places as St.Albans, Burlington, Mallet's Bay, and Basin Harbor to name a few. In Burlington, the Vermont State Police boats are moored at the Coast Guard station. Boats from the State Police and Fish and Wildlife often stop at the station when in the area. Having the State Police boats at the Coast Guard station provides unique opportunities for state and federal law enforcement to work closely together. Often the two agencies plan to go out and do boardings together, making combined use of the unique authority each agency has. Often, State Police can be found at the station standing by, talking with members of the station, while preparing to get underway for duty. The two agencies share intelligence and opportunities for education sessions.

- COLCHESTER POLICE
- The Colchester Police Marine Unit is the local police unit on Lake Champlain for the town of Colchester during the boating season. The Coast Guard and Colchester police often exchange intelligence on Colchester's area of operation in Mallets Bay and work together during joint boarding sessions in that area. Also, at times, Colchester will respond to Coast Guard Search and Rescue or Law Enforcement cases in Mallets Bay, and when Colchester Police request it, the Coast Guard will respond to incidents in the area along with Colchester. Colchester 161 and 163 are the Marine Law Enforcement Officers for Colchester.
- OTHER RESOURCES
- Many towns on Lake Champlain have Fire and Rescue or emergency maritime units. On the New York side of the lake, Clinton County Sherrif maintains boats on the lake and patrols. Also, Fish and Wildlife patrols in its own boats, and there is a Customs station at the Canadian border (on the water).
