Regulas submarine crews get Deterrent Patrol Pin Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Public Affairs Norfolk (NWSA) -- When USS Grayback (GGS 574) slipped it,s moors and headed into the Pacific Ocean in September 1959, it begain an era of submarine history that would go unrecognized for almost 40 years. The accomplishments of Sailors assigned to the Navy,s handful of Regulas guided missile submarines are long and storied. The five Regulas sumarines, Grayback, USS Tunny (SSG 282), USS Barbero (SSG 317), USS Growler (SSG 577) and USS Halibut (SSGN 687 deployed on 41 deterrent patrols under the Earth,s oceans over the course of five years. Recognition of the patrols that ended when Halibut returned in July 1964, is finally being made. VADM Richard W. Mies, commander, Submarine Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet, has notified the Bureau of Naval Personnel that crew membersd "who onducted Regulas missile deterrent patrols are hereby authorized to wear the SSBN Deterrent Patrol Insignia in accordance with article 1420130 of the MILPERSMAN and in the fashion prescribed by the Naval Uniform Regulations." I'm a former Tunny sailor, an ET. I was aboard from mid 1959 thru mid 1960. The Captain was named Morris A. Christensen, and the Exec was Mr. Fullinwider, and the Missile Officer was Mr. Melim. The Electronics Officer was Mr. McLaren. My boss was Chief Petty Officer Alexander. We went on at least two 'Northern' runs, and ended one in Japan. I can remember going ashore in Adak a couple of times, thinking it was the armpit of the world. We must have scared the devil out of the locals up there, with our odors, beards, and strange uniforms. I'd do it all again.
