Mountaineering

Pietrosu 2000

It takes two long days just to reach the peak. One has to stop half way on the ascent and spend the night somewhere. One can only conquer it after 12 hours of hard climbing, carrying heavy backpacks and a lot of provisions. The weather could vary from scorching heat to -35 degrees C in a matter of a few hours. On top, the wind is strong enough to push a grown man into the abyss.
It's called Pietrosu (The Rocky One), and it's the highest peak of the Caliman mountain ranges, in Northern Romania.

I tried to climb Pietrosu in 1999. The trip was very long and very hard. We got lost, there was a thunderstorm, we got attacked by dogs and then we got stuck in deep snow. The only thing that saved us were the voices of workers from the Calimani Meteorological Station. We had to return at that time, as fog and storms envaled Pietrosu. I couldn't even see it.
But I was back, one and a half years later, in december 2000. With a larger group, some of them who also were in the august 1999 trip, we had a great trip and a holiday to remember. This time, the weather was great and we could climb Pietrosu and take lots of pictures. Unfortunately only three of them are scanned, but I hope you will enjoy them.

    Pietrosu 2000

Although an expedition to Pietrosu neccesitates weeks of physical training, lots of equipment, food and a well-prepared team, I am definitely going there again.
The cabain situated in the middle of the ascending road has been destroyed; and since the ascent lasts at least two days, God knows where the hikers that are now conquering Pietrosu sleep during the 2-day road. Some people approach it however from the North East, coming in from the world famous resort in Vatra Dornei.
Well, after two trips and a lot of effort, I have finally conquered Pietrosu. And I don't know what, where, how, who and when, but I am definitely going back there. Care to join ?
