THE STRATEGY THAT WORKS

The true strategy of Risk does not lie in where you start. You
can win the game starting from anywhere.
1) At the beginning of the game (before armies are placed), find
the location where you have the most areas lined up under your
command (this is also known as a territory path, and this is a
critical part of path fortification, an optional rule).
2) Dump every one of your armies here. Make sure that each of
these areas has an equal number of armies, or close to it. Forget
the rest of your areas: they don't matter.
3) Now you should have 4 or 5 heavily armed areas. On your turn,
capture one new territiory and then stop. You will get a card, and
you won't dilute your army supply.
4) Repeat that procedure for every turn until you trade in a set
of cards. If you get at least 15 for an exchange, take 2 or 3 new
territories on that turn, then stop and take your card.
5) Keep your boundaries SMALL. The more exposed land you have,
the better chance somebody has of attacking one of your ares with 2
or 3 of theirs.
6) Work inside continents before branching out. This is
especially true for Australia, Africa and S. America. Take the
entire continent before you do anything else, unless the continent
in question is Europe or Asia. Try to save those two for last,
unless you already own the entire eastern hemisphere.
7) 9 times out of 10, the game will end in Kamchatka, Japan,
Madagascar, Central America, Greenland, Iceland, Alaska or Eastern
Australia. If you don't already have one of these at the beginning
of the game, forget about them until the end. However, if you have
both Greenland and Iceland OR Alaska and Kamchatka at the
beginning, it's almost the same benefits as having a continent.
I have never lost using this strategy. Try using it!
