JULY 21, 2001 - - Bill Richards has been elected commander of American Legion Pony Express Post 359 for the 2001-2002 program year.

Other officers of Post 359 — chosen by members during the June 6 election — include the following: Vice Commander John McKinney, Adjutant Jerome Goolsby, Finance Officer Frank Schaag, Service Officer Ralph Powell, Chaplain Jesse Olvera, Sergeant-At-Arms Robert Cox, Sr., Historian Jim Hall, and Executive Committee members Bobby Knowles and Wayne Hector. Executive Committee member Bob Beaver was not up for election.

The officers were installed on July 18 at the Post. American Legion Department of Missouri Commander Norman Campbell served as the installing officer.

Before the ceremony, three Legionnaires were recognized for their service to the Post and its’ programs. Past Post Commanders Bob Beaver, Tony Drennan and Charlie Modrell received special plaques of honor by David Voyles, Department of Missouri Alternate National Executive Committeeman and member of Post 359.

Post 359 was chartered on January 24, 1946 and has a long history of providing aid to children’s assistance organizations and charities, and to assisting needy veterans in the St. Joseph area.

Post 359 has already launched its’ membership campaign for the 2001-2002 program year, according to Commander Richards.

“I realize not every veteran can be active in our Post,” Commander Richards said. “However, active or not, members can become involved in the work of the Legion here in St. Joseph, and at the state and national levels through their American Legion membership.”

American Legion Pony Express Post 359 has its’ headquarters at 4826 Frederick Avenue in St. Joseph.
