May 6, 2001 - - - American Legion Pony Express Post 359 paid host to a visit from American Legion National Vice Commander Charles C. Ragsdell Sunday evening. Vice Commander Ragsdell was visiting Missouri as part of the Legion’s membership drive for 2001.
Ragsdell addressed several issues concerning membership for the attendees who came from several of the Legion Posts in the region.
“There is one tried and true method for getting new members – ask them,” Ragsdell emphasized. Vice Commander Ragsdell also said that only 12 percent of eligible veterans belong to the Legion. He also said Posts should consider altering how they operate in order to better serve younger veterans and encourage them to join the Legion.
Accompanying Ragsdell was Del
Snodgrass, commander of the Legion’s Department of Missouri and Norman
Campbell, senior vice commander for the Department of Missouri. Legion
dignitaries attending the event included Ralph Bliley, commander of the
Department of Missouri’s 4th District; Frank Fleisher, commander of
Legion Post 11 in St. Joseph; Stan Stubblefield of Post 287 in Savannah; Jerome
Goolsby, vice commander of the Sons of The American Legion Detachment of
Missouri; Bob Beaver, a past commander of the 4th District; Larry Waller,
finance officer for the 4th District; and Post 359 Commander Bill Richards.
