JUNE 11, 2001- - -Members of Pony Express Post 359 of The American Legion here in St. Joseph donated thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of service to their community, Post Commander Bill Richards announced today.

The annual report of Post 359, submitted to the national organization, is compiled with thousands of others to give The American Legion some measurement of the extent of the services of the nation’s largest veterans organization.

As a federally chartered organization, The American Legion must submit an annual report of its activities and programs to Congress, Commander Richards explained. The national organization’s report, in large part, represents the compilation of the summaries turned in by its thousands of posts.

For the program year ending May 31, 2001, Post 359 contributed over $1000 in direct aid to needy veterans, and to the Veterans Administration Voluntary Services program. However, contributions to the assistance of veterans were not restricted to cash, Commander Richards said. In addition to its cash contributions, Post 359 members gave 305 hours to VAVS.

Participation by Post 359 in community service activities and other area projects totaled 100 volunteer hours and over $6000 in expenditures.

Additionally, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 359 and Sons of the American Legion Pony Express Squadron 359 assisted veterans and the community at large as members of the American Legion “family”. Auxiliary Unit 359 gave $1,650 in veterans support and $1000 in donations to community charities and children’s aids. Squadron 359 gave over $500 in support of children and youth programs, veterans assistance programs and community service activities.
