AUGUST 1, 2000 - - One of the biggest responsibilities of citizenship is coming up on August 7, according to Commander Jerome L. Goolsby of the Sons of The American Legion Pony Express Squadron 359.
“Our fathers and their fathers before them gave up personal pursuits and livelihoods and in some cases their very lives for the freedom we have today in the United States,” Goolsby said. “We citizens as the beneficiary of that sacrifice have a responsibility to vote in elections and make known our desires instead of letting a minority of voters decide the fate of all of us.”
Commander Goolsby also stated that only high voter participation levels would impress on elected officials what their constituents want. Otherwise, they may resort to opinion polling data to make decisions.
Commander
Goolsby also addressed voting participation levels. “During the last
presidential election less than 55
percent of registered voters nationwide bothered to cast a ballot for
president,” Goolsby said. “That is appalling. I encourage all registered and
eligible voters to inform themselves on the issues and candidates and cast
their vote so our great nation can continue to flourish.”
