FEBRUARY 22, 2001 - - Today marks the 269th birthday of the man who is referred to as “The Father of His Country” – George Washington.

“It can be argued that George Washington is our greatest citizen,” said Sons of The American Legion Squadron 359 Commander Jerome L. Goolsby. “Washington was our first great military leader. After taking command of the Continental Army in 1775, his discipline, courage and leadership proved decisive in the victory over the British Empire in the Revolutionary War in 1781. He then served as president of the Constitutional Convention which created our Constitution in 1787. He was then unanimously elected the first President of the United States in 1789 and unanimously re-elected four years later. As president, he set many of the practices and traditions of the presidency that are still followed to this very day. And for good measure, he was an excellent farmer, beginning many farming practices and experimentation that are still having an impact on our agriculture.”

Commander Goolsby urged all citizens to remember Washington on his birthday and to fly the flag in his honor.
