Get excited!  This is what Ultimate is all about.  This is why you go to practice and work on skills throughout the week.  You will learn more about how to play in the morning of your first tournament than you will ever learn in practice.  We play against other club teams in the Fall and other college teams in the Spring.  The Spring is our chance to shine, so we want as many people as possible to make Spring Sectionals and Regionals.

Before you go to your first tournament, you should make sure you have a clue of what the Official Rules are.  But as the official rules are very long, try to read up on the basic rules first.  This is stuff that you might not think about in practice, but might come up in a tournament.

The most important thing for you to do is to play good defense!  Don't worry about dropping the disc or making bad throws.  That happens to everyone, whether they are beginners or veterans.  It's much more important that you shut your player down (i.e. stop them from making cuts) and keep the force.  Don't forget to stall count!

What to expect a your first tournament:
Packing list for a weekend tournament (the basics):
*pillow
*sleeping bag
*soccer cleats (if you don't have cleats --- most comfy running shoes)
*$$$ for tournament fee and gas (a lot of the time time---food and hotel as well)
*2 dark shirts (black, blue, green, red or dark orange)
*2 light shirts (white or gray)
*4-5 pairs of socks
*2 sports bras & 3 pairs of underwear (and a bra for Saturday night)
*comfy clothes for Saturday evening (flip-flops feel great after being in cleats all day...and don't rub on blisers)
*running shorts (or skirt)
*pair of windpants, running tights or sweatpants (it's usually cool on Sunday morning)
*Sunscreen, stuff for shower and toiletries (you don't need the make-up, blow dryer, curling iron usually...)
*Appropriate weather gear: rain gear always...in Oct., Nov., Mar., and Apr., consider bringing layers (lightweight long sleeve, lightweight fleece, gloves, hats, running tights, warm coat) that you can play in.
*Tapes/CD's for the drive
*Homework? (This is a hard call...it takes a lot of dedication to get homework done on Saturday night when you are soooo tired and everyone else is hanging out and having fun.  Remember that we all usually pile into hotel rooms so it can be really distracting.  Fun but distracting!)

***Disclaimer:  Every tournament is different.  You'll get more details before the tourney, but here is what usually happens.***
We leave early Saturday morning from in front of the Student Center (facing Wyckoff).  The drive involves catching up on sleep and talking.  We arrive 45-30 min. before the first game starts.  Captains head off to the Captains' meeting.  Some players start gearing up (putting cleats on, etc.), while others choose to toss around first.  Most veterans take some sort of warm-up jog and then stretch.  Captains return.  A couple of players run to get bagels, oranges and water from the "tent".  Everyone else finishes getting geared up and then *tosses around.  The otherteam comes over and we flip discs to see whether we are dark/light, pulling/receiving and what side of the field we start on  We usually run the endzone drill, then cheer.  Then it's time for the 1st game.  Usually you defend who ever is lined up across from you at the opposite end of the field.  Then we play.  When we are finished with the game, we do the "good-game" line.  Then head back to our sideline to come up with a cheer for the other team.  Repeat this process 3-5 times starting at the the *.  We either check into the hotel or eat dinner as soon as we are done.  We eat out for dinner (usually cheap-Subway, Wendy's, Fazolli's etc.) or if we are really lucky one of the great parents in the area will feed us.  Then it's back to the hotel room to take showers and hang out for the night.  Sunday morning, we usually try to hit the free breakfast of cereal or donuts at the hotel (or really cool parents feed us!).  We check out and drive back out to the fields to be there before 9am.  Usually, first round starts at 9 am.  Same process as above.
