Teams at Savannah in 2001

You know that if the second thing (after sleeping) you do after getting back from a trip is broadcast all the good and bad times on the Internet...it was quite the trip.

This year was the trip of transportation.  We had one car rear ended before it even left Peoria.  Another of our players, Weiner, had to leave his car at the most ghetto 24 hour mechanic shop in lovely Chattanooga, TN.  This is all ended up leading to our trusty retired Captain but still everyone's slave-at-large, Brad Gusek, driving his car and people down to Savannah from Chattanooga.  Dropping off the car.  Picking up Rachel Hamilton's mini van and Phil Santy, driver extrodonaire, and driving straight back up to Chattanooga (51/2 hours away), collecting the remaining stranded folks and returning to Savannah.  The van made it back into Savannah at about 4am.  However, the last of our team arrived at 6:30 am on Monday morning and proceeded to wake up the entire dorm (yeah Little Rob!!!!!).

Women games were played on Monday in SUPER high wind/bitter cold.  We played Wellesley X (Wells-leee not Wes-leee though it took all of us almost all week to get it right).  The game against the Whips was great and we scored a couple of points (4-9 final score, Jessica???).  We then played Vermont who vary elegantly beat us.  We bageled it like Einsteins, baby.  (New Ultimate jargon term learned this week.....to bagel is to score 0 points against the opposing team).  It rained Monday night which shut down the Soccer fields on Tuesday (It also signalled the untimely death of Monday night Strip Disc).  So we cancelled games and went back to bed.  At about noon everyone woke up, better rested and in some cases considerably more sober.  The sun was out and it was beautiful.  But the fields were still closed.  So the executive decision was made to play co-ed hat games out on Tybee Island beach.  It was a beautiful day and the boys playing Ultimate were beautiful, and the Ultimate was beautiful, and the beach was beautiful.  Yeah, beautiful!  That night was the very well organized and very FUN Pink Panty/Blue Boxer Party hosted by Wellesley and Union at Tybee Island at their beach house.  Lots of dancing, partying and general good times.  Wednesday games consisted of Tuesday's games and one more to catch up for the loss of field time.  This was the great tour of open space in Savannah.  We started by playing at the soccer complex, but a man in a van drove up and told us fields were closed.  So all of the women's teams took off to Daphne Fields to find Ed.  We found Ed who then sent us on to the gorgeous Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah.  Games finally got underway.  First point against Grab Bag (a mix of OSU, Dartmouth and ????) one of the OSU's girls layed out into horse shit.  With a quick "equipment" we were playing again.  Or more specifically, they were playing again.  We got spanked a good bagel by Grab bag.  We played Wellesley Y and Stephanie Cha-Ching scored our only point against the Tails with an assist from Allison, our pick-up from Smith College.  Yeah, Rookies!  Yeah, Pick-Ups!  Wednesday night was the party at TUSK.  Strippy Tippy Cup basically explains it all.  Once again lots of fun!!!  Thursday was women's quarters, semis, and finals.  We played a very good beginning game against KU.  We then learned that we were supposed to be playing Wellesley X, Whips.  A field change and a re-start.  The game against Wellesley went 15-0 but I think we played one of the better games of our week against them.

So we came home 6th from Savannah.  Don't ask about our successes off the field.  Leave it said that we had a great week and came home with some great new nicknames.  Everyone survived the drive home even after Becca Kreidler put a nice hole in the sidewall of her tire on a pothole outside of Macon, GA (though it's Saturday so the Smoky group hasn't come in yet).
