Spin Off
Recently, Tim, one of the many Hagger Researchers we are in touch with, was reviewing the DNA test results on our web site and realised he could be related to one of our test candidates as he is descended from John Hagger born about 1820 in Epping. By doing a little bit of work we were able to show that Robert,, our test candidate, and Tim are indeed related. Tim is descended from James, the brother of John, whom Robert is descended from; John and James were sons of James born in about 1784.
Robert’s family history story is much longer than we have space for here in the Newsletter, but his story bears out the need for checking and double checking your data and facts. Back in 1994, Robert paid Debrett’s to research his family history and they concluded he was descended from one of the Therfield Hagger’s. Martin Hagger was not totally convinced of this and eventually we traced Robert’s roots back to the Epping branch. The problem Debrett’s had was finding James Henry Hagger, Robert’s Great Grandfather. Subsequently, we found that whilst he was James Henry on his son’s marriage certificate he was mainly known as William James. Robert also had some sadness in his family history as his Grandfather (also a Robert) had committed suicide and Debrett’s found the press cuttings for his inquest. You will shortly see some more information on the Epping Hagger’s on our Ancestors Pages.
Project News
Thanks to some sterling work by Doug Fitzjohn in Australia, we now have captured
all the Hagger (and most variants) Birth, Marriage and Deaths from the GRO indexes
up to 2004 -
Martin and I have been working on the Wills indexes and we have captured some 1,123 entries from 1858 to 1990. So if you had an ancestor die during this period and wonder whether they left a will contact Peter and he will do a look it up for you.
Other work has also been progressing on building families within our master database and cross referencing from entries in the Times database.
An area where we have made significant progress is on collecting data on marriages occurring between 1837 to 1911. You may realise during this period the GRO Marriage index does not give a spouse’s surname. As a result of a project organised by the Guild of One Name Studies, we have now collected marriage information on 329 of the 1,831 marriages in this period. We are now taking part in the project trying to find details of various marriages that occurred during this period in the Royston registration District.
More details on what data we hold can be found on our Data Available page.
Families
If you are researching these families Peter Hagger would very much like to hear from you, he may be able to help you or put you in touch with researchers with a common interest.
