Albert Edward Hagger, born 24 May 1876. in London, a secretary.  Next of kin, wife G E S Hagger, living at Golders Green, London.  Why did he sign up with the Canadian forces when his home address is given as London and his wife was living in the UK?  Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate his marriage but have quite a lot of information on the family.  His father was a Henry Thomas Hagger, a Coffee House Keeper.  He was descended from John Hagger, a Cordwainer of Ipswich, born sometime between 1785 and 1795.  The family contained a number of Outfitters who had shops in Edgware Road and Sloane Street in London.

Henry Alfred Hagger, born 3 May 1887, Halling, Kent, Railway Conductor.  Next of kin, wife, Annie Hagger living in Alberta.  Henry Alfred was one of nine children of William Henry Hagger and Emily Hart.  William Henry’s father was another William and he was a Marine (this is how the family ended up in Kent) and was born in Surrey in about 1835; his father was John Hagger and was a victullar at the time of his marriage.

Josiah Hagger, born 30 May 1888, Bourn, Cambridgeshire, a farmer.  Next of kin, father James Hagger, living at Howe Green Farm, Buntingford, Hertfordshire.  We can trace this family back to at least Thomas Hagger, born about 1774 at Wrestlingworth in Bedfordshire.  At sometime he moved to Bourne, Cambridgeshire and was buried in the church yard there in 1853.  Currently, I am trying to complete this family’s tree.

William Hagger, born 23 September 1884, Hackney, London, a shipper.  Next of kin wife Mary Louisa Hagger living in Winnipeg.  Unfortunately we know no more about William.

If you know anything about these individuals, particularly what happened to them during or after the war, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Harold Hagger

In the last Newsletter I mentioned this infamous ancestor who was hung in 1947 for murder.  I have not yet completed an Ancestors page on him as Martin Hagger has been continuing to find out more about Harold.  Recently Martin and I went to the National Archives and we were able to handle the police files on the case.  Some of you in the UK may remember the TV series back in the 1950s or 60s called Fabian of the Yard, well Fabian was not just a fictional detective he actually existed.  It was Fabian who investigated the murder for which Harold was hung.
