Pearl Pass
Pearl Pass the most spectacular trail I have ever ridden. Though I have said I thought other trails were the most beutifull I have ever seen I really mean it on this one.
Though the entire trail is beautiful, it is breath taking when you round the corner top the pass and see Montozuma Basin for the first time. 14,265 Castle Peak is in the back ground.
I am nearly ashamed to place these picture on this web site since they really do no justice on how beatiful this area actually is. As you can see in the picture, the entire time you are in the basin you are riding on Tallis Slopes(huge bolder fields).
Though this trail is only open a few weeks a year due to the snow blocking the trail there are many people using it. We saw a few Jeeps, one ATV, five or six motorcycles and many bikers.
The views coming up to the pass are also beautiful so plain to bring a camera with plenty of film. Since the trail connects Crested Butte with Aspen you can buy more film in Aspen if you run out.
As you leave the Crested Butte area the trial starts as an easy dirt dirt road but quickly becomes one of the truffest rated 4-wheeldrive roads in Colorado. The only real problem we had is that our bike lost much needed horse powere as the trail got higher and rougher.
We connected this trail with Taylor Pass and Italian creek road to make a loop of about 90 miles. To ride the loop as we did you will have to be street leagal because there are a few miles of asfault you must ride on. The pass is ok for ATVs.
Not only are there many miles two track jeep roads in this area but there are also over 200 miles of single track for Dirt Bike, Mountain Bikes and Hikers called Cement Creek. That area is not open for use by jeeps and ATVs.

Directions: Drive south from Crested Butte for 2 miles and turn left at the Crested Butte Country Club sign, this will change into Brush Creek Road 738. Follow the main road for a short ways and it will give way to a gravel road. The way to Pearl Pass will be clearly marked. There is a camping area a little ways from were the last picture was taken. You will see it on the right just before you cross a creek and can be easily reached by any car or truck.
