The
Little Plough - Plugusorul |
"Plugusorul" is a small
plough but in Romanian folklore is a traditional procession with a decorated
plough, on New Years' Day. The Romanian welcome the New Year with "Plugușorul",
which is a symbol of ploughing. Being a well wishing for the field bearing
on New' Years Day, this custom arises from "Carmen arvale", a wish from
the Romans from the protection of the crops.

The ploughmen group has
teenagers and children having whip, bells and pipes in the hands. They
hold the horns of the plough. Others carry the whip, the bag with wheat
seeds, musical instruments, bells, drums, pipes or instruments producing
noises to drive away the evil spirits. Their noises accompany the well
wishing.
The good wishes are very
beautiful including much poetry. The gifts for the waits are the fruit-
tree or crop of the fields, such as twists and pretzels.
