Welcome to Petru Dumitru's 5th graders

from "Duiliu Zamfirescu" School Focsani, Romania

Our country Romania is situated in the central-east European zone, between 43 and 48 degrees North latitude and between 20 and 29 degrees East longitude. The Romanians are the descendents of two great peoples of the ancient times: Geto- Dacians and the Romans.

This country has a great variety of landscapes, folk tradition and art and a very pleasant climate. Romania has a temperate continental climate, which shows the country at its best in all seasons: bright, sunny days on the Black Sea Coast in summer, orchards full of big ripe fruit in autumn, snow- covered ski-slopes in the Carpathians in winter and signs of new life in the vast forests and fields when spring comes.

The town of Focsani is the administrative center of Vrancea County. It lies in the South- East of Romania, on the parallel of 46 degrees North latitude.

At present our school has 20 classrooms, a library containing over 25,000 books, a computer lab having 8 computers without hard disk, a workshop and a surgery. There are 59 classes- about 1700 pupils that study in three shifts. Our school is famous for lots of good results in different competitions the pupils take part in. There are competitions in Romanian literature and grammar, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History and Physical Education. Our students have won prizes in local and national competitions.

We first heard about Internet years ago. We think it is a brilliant idea to be part of the global learning process.

The network projects connect us to the world wide with its own contemporary problems. On the other hand their subjects and themes make us work in a profitable way for both sides. Learning by the aid of computer network communications gives us the opportunity to realize that we work properly.

You may wonder what do the pupils from our school wish now at the beginning of the 21st century? First of all we would like a better life. We need more food for all the hungry people and less crime on the streets. We need more security in our life and more peace for all children suffering from the terror of destroying weapons.

We want to become happy persons in a beautiful world, respecting all the people in our world despite color, language, opinions or financial status and help people in need. That it will be the best experience of your life.

We are always open to new ideas and better ways of teaching especially now that technology has made the world so small!
