Welcome to the students and teachers from
Mihai Eminescu Highschool
Cãlãrasi, Romania
We are a group of students from Cãlãrasi, Romania, aged 7 to 17, studying at Mihai Eminescu Highschool. We are greatly interested in your project and we would like to be a part of it.

We would also like to introduce you to our country and town, to make you better acquainted to our life. Romania is located in the South-East of Central Europe at the border with the Balkans and the Orient. Its territory is divided in two almost equal parts by the parallel of 460 Northern latitude. It is also crossed by the meridian of 250 Eastern longitude. Romania is situated in Europe, in the Northern hemisphere, between the parallel of 48 gr.15' Northern latitude in the North and the parallel of 43 gr.37' Northern latitude in the South.

As a consequence, we can say that Romania is situated halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, having a temperate continental climate characterized by hot summer days and frosty winters. At the same time Romania is situated in the Eastern hemisphere between the meridian of 20015' Eastern longitude and the meridian of 290 41' Eastern longitude. The country is divided in a number of 42 counties, Cãlãrasi being one of them.

The capital city has given its name to the whole county - Cãlãrasi. It is situated in the South-Eastern part of Romania, on the left bank of the river Borcea, the main tributary of the Danube, a most important European river crossing 7 countries. The town of Cãlãrasi is situated in the Bãrãgan Plain at the meeting point of the parallel of 440 12' Northern latitude and of the meridian of 270 12' Eastern longitude. The town is placed at a distance of 118 Km from Romania's capital the city of Bucharest and at 143 km from Constantza, Romania's most important port on the Black Sea Coast. The average temperature of the area is +11,20 C, varying between 230 C in July and -30 C in January.

Having been offered many natural advantages by its geographical site, such as water, game fish, pasture, forest and productive, fertile land, the first human settlements date back to the neolitic (5500-1900 B.C.), which is proved by the numerous archeological discoveries. However, in the 16th  century, around 1595, under the reign of Michael the Brave, the settlement is registered by the name of Lichiresti and on the 24th of September 1852 it received its present name.

Nowadays, the town has a population of about 80,000 inhabitants. Cãlãrasi combines at the same time, the new and the old. There are 11 schools and 7 high schools in our town. "Mihai Eminescu" high is one of them. It has about 1,100 students divided in 5 primary grades (ages 7 to 11), 6 junior high grades (ages 11-14) and 24 high school grades (ages 15 to 18). We are students in the 1A, 4B, 9F and 10C grades.

There are 22 students in the 1st grade, 9 boys and 13 girls. They are fond of Math, English, music (piano, violin), modern dance, painting, they love animals, reading and roller-skating.

The 4th grade is made up of 21 students, 6 boys and 15 girls. They enjoy sports and music, Math and English, they are fond of trips and games in the open.

The 9th F is made up of 26 students, 23 girls and 3 boys. This is a bilingual class, where the students learn both English and French. Although they study foreign languages they are also fond of connection Math to their activities. They are great MTV fans and they love chatting on the INTERNET.

The 10thC has 25 students, 12 girls and 13 boys. Their major is computer work. They are great Math fans and obviously computer addicted. They also like literature and music, the language for all ages.

As a rule we study 13 to 15 subjects, the number of classes depends on each section and may vary between 30 to 35 per week. This is who we are, and what we like. We hope we will do a good job together. Looking forward to cooperativy with you.
