Connecting Math: Just for Fun #20
A "Just for Fun" math game from the students of Gate/Plus at White Elementary School and their teacher Kevan Chuc in Tucson, Arizona, USA <chuc@azstarnet.com>

How to Play SKUNK, a mental math game.
(This game will sharpen your math operational skills)

The object of the game is to get as many points as possible without being skunked and you will win the game.

1. Get one or two die.

2.  Get a piece of paper and divide it into 5 sections putting one letter in each column. S/K/U/N/K. You can play a column at a time.

3. All students stand.  Teacher will call the operation. (Ex. Multiply by 3 and take away 5)

4.  Roll die and play. (You pass the die from one student to the next or you can use several die. Teacher calls the operation and each student rolls and gets different numbers and then does the operation with those numbers.)

5. Calculate quickly to get the answer within 10 seconds. Write your answer in the column. Each column contains your personal points.

6. In each round the student will have to decide if they want to remain in the game or sit down with the points he or she has.  If you roll a one you are "skunked" and lose all your points and are out of the game.

7. If you roll doubles or "snake eyes"  (two ones) you can double your points.

8.  Each person can take a turn creating an operation.

9.  A person wins the game with the most points and who is still standing. (You win if you are the last person standing without being skunked and have the most points, however a person could have the most points if they sat down so as to not risk being skunked.  You can play five separate games, one for each letter or wait until the end of the word skunk to add up your points.)

This is a really fun game and fast too.
