Five loaves
Once upon a time, two travellers
halted near a well. The first one took out 3 loaves out of his wallet,
and the other one only two. When they began to eat, a third traveller appeared
and asked them for some food. The two accepted him and they ate together
the five loaves. The stranger gave them 5 lei ("lei", Romanian currency),
said "Thank you" and left.
The first two travellers
shared the money. The one who had had 3 loaves kept 3 lei for him and he
gave 2 lei to the other. The one who had had 2 loaves wasn’t satisfied
and he asked for the money to be shared equally. They couldn’t come to
an agreement, so they went to a judge. How did the judge solve the problem?
The judge told them to cut
every loaf in 3 equal pieces. There are 5* 3=15 pieces. Each of them ate
15:3=5 pieces. From the first one’s three loaves 3* 3=9 pieces were obtained.
He himself ate 5 pieces, and the stranger ate the rest of 4 pieces. From
the second one’s two loaves 2* 3=6 pieces were obtained. He himself ate
5 pieces, and the piece left (6-5=1) was given to the stranger. Therefore,
the first traveller should take 4 lei, and the second one only 1 leu.
