Rochelle: Now a Service Dog for the handicapped |
We're very proud to have two of our pups working as Assist Dogs. One as a Service Dog, One as a Seeing Eye Dog. Both pups came from the same litter and proved they had what it took. Assist Dogs go through several years worth of training, starting as puppies. Programs, which provide such dogs to those who need them, have foster homes or "Puppy Raisers" who start the pups training at about 8 weeks. Generally the pups live with "Puppy Raisers" for their first year. After that they go to the Program's main training facility where they must then be trained by professional handlers and pass a variety of tests before even being considered. If they master this training they are then matched with their new owner and go through yet another training phase, on site, with the handler and new owner before both Graduate from the program. By about 3 years of age, if all goes well, the now adult dog goes home to live a long and useful life with someone who needs them. |
