How to Help a Ferret Rescue
Most ferret rescues are started by simple "ferret lovers".
Because of their love for animals, and especially ferrets,
and their compassion for living creatures or orphans that
have no home, they are willing to open their own home
so that our little friends will not be cast out, or worse,
euthanized. They use their own funds and resources to
provide the basic needs: food, water, a clean cage, and
several hugs. As some become ill, again personal funds
are used to take care of medical problems. Unless a
proper adoptive home can be found, the castaway can
end up being a permanent resident. Sometimes the age
or health of the ferret makes it impossible to adopt out.
Ferrets are very sensitive to changes in environment
and a rescue must determine possible health risks that
accompany a move to another home. And so, a rescue
like ours can build up a large population in a short time.
Although the cost to house and care for one ferret is
only $8.00 per month, multiplying this by 20 or 30
ferrets can really put a strain on finances. In addition,
the amount of time spent cleaning cages and litter boxes
and running ferrets also is multiplied.
