In 1911 in Germany he worked in the company of M Reinhardt and in the Königliches Schauspielhaus, in 1912 in Budapest he joined the company of the Új Szinház.

He became familiar with film direction in Berlin. In 1915, Jenö Janovics invited him to become the director of the Proja Company in Kolozsvár.

After this in Budapest he worked for the Astra, Uranus, Uher and then the Hungaria companies. Between 1919 and 1921 he worked for the Corvin company. Later he moved to Germany where he settled. In 1924, for a short period of time, he was the director of the Belvárosi Szinház in Budapest, but at the end of the year he returned to Berlin.

All in all he created forty films.

He is one of the most important personages of the silent movie era. He would gladly take serious written works before the cameras. The Film Archive in Hungary currently preserves a copy of his "Anna Karenina".

A Hungarian newspaper in an article which reviews the various versions of "Anna Karenina" made up to the time of the article states the following:

"A sorozatból a magyarok sem maradhattak ki. Garas Mártonnak a némafilmkorszaknak egyk legnagyszerübb rendezöjének köszönhetö, hogy 1918 ban filszalagra vitte nagy drámai szinésznönk, Varsányi Irén parádés alakitását, Anna szerepében. A Hungária filmgyár produkciójában készült a film és Varsányi partnerei közt oly neveket találunk, mint Kertész Dezsöét, Fenyvessi Emilét, Igalits Sandyét, Virányi Sándorét. A film külsöi felvételeit jórészt Vasóban forgatták, mig a lóversenytéren játszódó jelenteket a hires alagi pályán vették fel."
