Gergely
Albert
Albert Gergely [born Adolf Ganzfried or Ganczfried]
Albert was born on 15 May 1884 at Beregszász,
then in Hungary now known as Berehovo in the Ukraine. There is an interesting discrepancy about his date of birth. The
declarations by Falus Ede and Klein Andor advise 15/5/1884. However in an
advert which is about the flat he owned at St. István Park in Budapest
laying claim to said flat, he states he was born in 1894?
He married Irén Fischer on 19 May 1919 and they had two twin children
Katalin and György born on 16 February 1920. We know that they lived for a
time at 41 Deák Ferenc Utca in Nyiregyháza with Menyhért Fischer
There is a statement that he was dragged from his home in 1944 on 20th
??? (month not stated). Reports seem to agree that he was shot by German
soldiers at Csomád on 8 November 1944. The grave site is unknown.
Occupation:
There are at least two versions of this in the
records and statements of people. One is that he was a 'gondnok' (caretaker) for a
number of agricultural estates. Another has him possessing a
doctorate/diploma for the practice of law and calling himself Dr. Gergely
Albert. Certainly his wife Irén called herself Dr. Gergely Albertné.
A
report was received from Peter Spiro in Canada to the effect that he had
been discussing our family with his aunt Klara. In the conversation which
took place he was told that Albert had in fact been disbarred from
practicing law, because he had been successful in defending a gypsy against
some criminal allegations brought by one of the major landowners in the
county.
According to this version of the story, Albert was never again allowed to
practice law hence his taking on work to manage an estate. This was a job that eventually enabled him to support his family.
