Commissioned by the Formation Films Limited of London for Channel 4 and winner of local as well as international prizes (Best Documentary, Film Academy of the Philippines; Special Jury, Image Forum Festival, Tokyo, Japan; Best Documentary, Mondial de la Video, Brussels, Belgium), this candid docudrama on the life of a gay Japayuki is actually a striking paean to the strength of the Filipino character. Minus the sensational trappings, it provides an inside peek into the social phenomenon of migrant labor and examines the complicated relationship between the Philippines and the country that invaded it in the Second World War.
