Canned
Cowboy
This Cowboy is
made in PSP 7.02 Using no outside filters.
This tutorial uses,
some vector and node editing and
many layers.
You should be familiar with PSP 7.
To begin this tutorial
you have to make the Tin Can and save it
as a tube.
If you have not yet done the can you can find it here:
Tin
Can Tutorial
If you just aren't
inclined to make your own can..
you can use the
tube that I made...
Tin_Can
Tube
I saw one of these
creations when I was in Galveston, Texas
in the spring of 2001
.
I knew I just had
to make one of these. I tried to keep it metallic
looking. But
you can play around and make him/her with clothes
or perhaps a straw
or felt cowboy hat ? This tutorial just gives
the basics of how
I put him together... be creative and explore all
the possibilities,
but most of all... HAVE FUN !!
I did not name my layers in this
tutorial. If it is easier for you,
be sure to name each layer as
you go.
Begin by opening a new image
400 X 500 , transparent background ,
16 million colors.
Body Building
Click on your picture tubes
and find your Can. The can
that you made from the above
tutorial and TUBED, or my tube.
You will have to experiment with
your can somewhat... but this one is
for his body and should be the
largest one almost in the center of your
image. Use the deformation
tool to pull the sides out and make it a
fatter can. Next we want
to go to IMAGE / FLIP. You may have to
Sharpen your image now... Effects
/ Sharpen
Now we want to add another layer.
Using your tube at about 50 % smaller
than you used for the body...
add an arm. Line it up at the top of your body,
then go to Image / Rotate...
15 degrees to the right... Effects / Sharpen.
Add another layer UNDER the top
arm and tube another can. Slide it up
attaching it to the bottom of
the top can. Continue to do this on the other
Side... adding layers for each
can ( I do this so I can move them around if
I am not happy with the angle
or placement). Be sure to REVERSE the angle
of rotation from RIGHT to LEFT
on the other side !!
Click on the body layer (the
largest can) and add another layer. Keeping your
can about the same size
as you were using on your arms...
... start building your leg.
Go to Image / Flip.. then Effects
Sharpen. Then add another
layer and add the bottom part of the leg. Flipping
ALL the cans on all portions
of the leg. You can rotate the leg a few degrees to
give it the feel of some movement.
Now add another layer... and
we will give him a head. Make the head Smaller
than the body but larger than
the arms and legs. I used the deformation tool
to give it some width.
Make sure this layer is under the body layer. And we
need to flip this can also.
The Face / Head
Let's put a face on him/her
now. Add a new layer for your eyes...click on your
preset shapes icon and select
the GEAR 5. Retain Style Checked..
This inner bevel is the Metallic
Preset
Click on preset shapes and this
time using the same preset...uncheck
Retain Style. On your
color fill choose Gradient / Metallic. Draw another
smaller gear inside your first
one. Then copy and paste as a new selection
for the other eye.
Add another layer and click on
your preset shapes ...
With the gradient fill Metallic
Select the TRIANGLE and
make a nose in the center between the eyes.
Then go to Effects / Artisitc
/ Chrome and make it a tad shinier.
Now add another layer for the
mouth. Click on preset shapes and choose
Gear 5 again, with RETAIN STYLE
checked. Make a smaller gear than the
ones for the eyes....
place in postition then Add the same inner bevel as
as you did on the eyes.
Copy and paste as a new selection
till you have the number you
want for your mouth to be completed.
Next we will make some ears.
Add a layer. Click on your preset shapes
and select circle/Ellipse with
Antialias checked and Metallic gradient as
your fill. Draw a circle
on the side of his head for his ear. Now apply
the same chrome settings as
above. Then go to Effects / Geometric /
Wave and apply these settings:
Copy and paste this ear to the
other side of the head. Now click on your
lasso tool. And going
down the side of the can on the ear then around the
part of the ear that is not
connected to the head... then click to select.
Now do the same to the other
ear... Using -1 instead of 1 for the horizontal.
The Hat
Add a new layer. Tube
another can on top of the head... somewhat
smaller than the head.
Use the deformation tool to make it wider. You
will need to flip this
can also and drag this layer under your head layer.
Add another layer. Click
on your preset shapes tool, Selecting the Teardrop.
With Antialias and vector
both checked and your metallic as the fill, click and
drag upwards with your mouse.
Turn the teardrop sightly to
position. You can push the nodes a bit to
get it positioned the way you
want it. Next copy / paste as a new layer.
When you get the two lined up
the way you want then turn off all other
layers and merge these two layers
together ..merge visable.
Then add cut out with the above settings.
Turn your other layers back on. Click on
the Can that is the top of the hat.
Draw a rectangle around it and then select it.
Add a new layer and go to Cut Out ...adding
the following settings for shadow on the hat,
from the brim.
Now we click on the can that
is the head. Draw a rectangle around and
select the head...adding another
layer and adding these Cut Out settings.
Now if you are Satisfied with
your head and hat, and the
placement of the eyes, nose
and mouth.... turn all other layers off
(the body layers)....
And Merge Visable the hat, head, eyes, nose,
ears and mouth. Now let's
tilt the head just a tad
I rotated mine 5 degrees
to the left.
The Feet
Click on the Draw tool
(pencil), choose point to point.. Vector checked
antialias checked... and your
gradient / metallic for the fill.
Move the nodes around till you
are satisfied with the look. Then convert to raster.
Next go to Effects / Artistic
/ Chrome.
The original man's feet were
sardine cans. I decided to add some spurs
to give him a more western flair.
Click on the preset shapes and select
Star 3 , gradient / metallic
for your fill , antialias checked , Vector NOT checked.
Make your spur on the side of
his foot. Add the Chrome .... then add the
Preset Inner Bevel / Metallic.
Merge the foot and the spur.
Copy and paste as a new layer. Mirror and
place on the other foot.
You may have to use the deformation tool to get
it placed in the position you
want.
The Hands
Click on the layer below your
last can of either arm. Click on the preset shapes
and select Elipse , antialias
checked... create as vector checked.
draw an elipse under the can.
Add some nodes and keep playing till you find
the look that you want. Then add the Chrome.
Copy and paste this hand as a new layer...
then mirror. Place it under the last can on the other
arm.
Now you have your basic canned cowboy.
You can add a scarf and badge or any other
accessories that you desire. Just have
some fun and see what you can come up with.
I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial.
