Rerun.

March 23, 2000

This 5 Flush episode of er capped off a disappointing evening of Must-See-TV. Liz's mom is leaving. Before she does, she tells Liz that she really likes Marc and thinks that Marc may be the man for her. As for Marc's dad, David, he ends up in the emergency room this week when his lungs fill up with fluid. Liz treats David and learns of his cancer. Liz asks Marc why he never told her about David's cancer. Marc says because his dad did not want to be pitied. She understands. Also, David continues to turn down chemotherapy treatment for his cancer.

Jing treats a guy named Frank who is also a nurse at the hospital. The two seem to really get along and I wouldn't be surprised if the two form a relationship. I really think these two may click, and I would much rather see Jing with Frank than with Dave. What else of love? Peter and Cleo continue their relationship. They go to a billiards club together where they kiss.

Abby treats a patient who has cancer. He is about to die, but Abby speeds up his death when she misaligns a needle inside of him. Later on in the morgue, she is practicing her needlework and ends up practicing on this patient...it is a sad moment.

Another sad story involved a woman who killed her baby by taking sleeping pills. The mother took sleeping pills and then passed the narcotic quality of the medicine onto her baby through breast milk...this was a lovely public service announcement.

Finally, Carter returns to work this week. He is having trouble at work so he goes to be comforted by his grandmother. Grandmother welcomes Carter back into her home...will she now hook him up with money again?

I found this 3 Flush episode so bland that I scoured the net for another person's summary so that I did not have to write my own. Sadly enough, I could not find one. I suppose that everyone wants to know what the dilly-yo is with Lucy. Nothing really. Not until about half of the episode is over do we see Carter. Carter is doing poorly but is alive and will recover. Lucy's mom comes to visit him. The mom says that Lucy really respected Carter and thought him to be a great man (this is the same line that Omar Epps's parents used on Benton. If the writers want to make Carter like Benton then they need to do so, but as this story is being written it just seems that the writers cannot come up with an original story). Carter says that he wishes he had told Lucy how great she really was. The mom then asks if getting stabbed was painful. Carter says that it was not, but then later tells Peter that it was one of the most painful experiences of his life. I suppose that this story is over.

Abby had a patient with hemorrhoids. She wanted to order extra bloodwork, because she intuited that he was sick. Kerry told Abby not to run the extra blood tests, because it would be a waste of money. Kerry told Abby to send the patient home. Abby ignored Kerry's advice and ran the test, but the test came back negative. Kerry then yells at Abby for ignoring her advice. Abby now has to release the patient even though she thinks the patient is sick Abby tells the patient that if he feels sick and "fluish" that he should come back to the er in 15 to 20 minutes (wink, wink). The episode progresses, and Kerry is called into a room. We see the hemorrhoids patient bleeding severely. Kerry saves the guy. She then goes to talk to Abby. Kerry tells Abby that it is a good thing that the patient came back, because if he hadn't, he would have died. Abby says that is a good thing the patient felt "fluish." Kerry says that it is interesting that the patient used the same word to describe his feelings. Is Abby the bomb-diggity doctor or what?

Liz returns to her apartment after spending the night with Marc. She is utterly shocked to see Marc's father at her apartment. Apparently, Marc's dad and Liz's mom (Isabel) are having an affair. Liz is so shocked by this affair that she makes her mother feel unwelcome in the apartment. Isabel almost moves to a hotel but decides not to when Liz realizes that she can finally bond with her mother. Apparently, Liz and mom were estranged during childhood, but mom says that she did what was best for Liz. Anyway, Isabel and Marc's dad are enjoying themselves for the few weeks that Isabel is in Chicago. However, Marc's dad has lung cancer that has spread into his liver. Dad has known about the cancer for a while, but does not want anyone to know, because he does not want to be associated with the stigma of having cancer especially since his disease is incurable. Marc, however, finds out about the cancer when he looks at a chest x-ray that dad has done at the hospital.

While working at the clinic, Carole sees two high school (maybe junior high school) girls. They ask for tests for STDs. Carole tests their blood and discovers that one of the girls has human paploma virus (HPV), a disease which may lead to cervical cancer. Carole learns that the girl got this disease while at a sex party. Carole goes to the girl's school to report that some guy is spreading HPV. The girls see Carole and get upset at her, but Carole knows that she is doing what is right.

Luca is driving home from the night shift of the er when he sees a kid get hit by a car. The driver of the car escapes, but Luca runs to the boy's rescue. He performs some immediate surgery on the boy which augmented the boy's injuries, but had Luca not performed the surgery, the boy would have died. The boy arrives at the er and is saved. Later in the day, Luca sees the driver of the car that hit the boy in the er. Luca has the man arrested. Do I think Luca cooler and a bigger hero now? Not really, but that's OK. He's not George Clooney, and I do not want another Clooney so let's kill Luca.

NEXT WEEK: Rerun.

Nine flushes this week. This week picked up exactly where last week left us. Kerry comes on duty in the middle of the Valentine's Day Party. She is very upset that the party is so loud and that nobody is paying attention to the goings on of the emergency room. She goes to find some equipment and sees blood coming out of a door. She opens the door and screams in horror. The race is now on to save Lucy and Carter. Lucy has cuts across her neck and abdomen whereas Carter is cut in the back, maybe the spleen. Liz and Marc are called back to the er. They have to come with their parents, because the four are still on their double date. Peter comes rushing from upstairs in the surgery ward to help. Peter is totally traumatized and will do nothing but help Carter. I was so touched to see the way Peter cared for Carter. Anyway, both are stabilized in the er, and they go up to surgery. Liz and Romano are covering Lucy whereas Peter and Anspaugh are helping Carter. Lucy is the first to come out of the operating room. She even regains consciousness, but alas this gain is only temporary before she dies in a hideous scene...her chest has been cracked open....cuts and blood everywhere. Liz and Romano trying to oppose the fates and brings Lucy back, but they cannot. No final words for Lucy, she dies while being operated on.

In the meantime, Kerry yells at Marc for not being in the er. Marc says that he put Luca in charge, and Luca says that everything was running smoothly. Kerry asks who committed this crime. We assume that it was Paul Sobriki. But why was Paul not being observed if he was schizophrenic? Kerry is mad at everyone. Will there be a legal battle if Lucy's parents sue the hospital for leaving her unattended? About this time, Paul's wife comes in. She says that there is no way Paul committed this crime, but we'll save that for later.

At the same time as Lucy is dying, Carter is being treated. Cleo, however, has her own patient who needs to be operated on immediately. No surgeon will come to help her, not even Peter (because he wants to stay with Carter). She decides to begin the surgery herself. Peter walks in on this and yells at Cleo and makes her leave. But Peter did this same thing a million times. He must have cracked open a dozen chests without authorization back in the heyday of er. After he finished treating Cleo's patient and after Carter has been stabilized, he apologizes to Cleo and says that he should have been there to help sooner. Carter gains consciousness and looks like he will recover. He learns that Lucy is dead. Will he feel the guilt of a neglectful teacher?

Finally, Paul returns to the er in an ambulance. Paul has been hurt and is acting violently. He says that he wants to kill a bunch of people. He is obviously sick. Part of the reason that he attacked Lucy and John was because last week they performed a spinal tap on him. Paul's wife does not know how to react.

A minor note: Abby may have money problems in the future. Also, big time passion between Marc's dad and Liz's mom.

I suppose that this episode, however, was much more than plot. During intense surgery scenes, there was often silence except for machines which were screaming and deafening the television viewer. The pained expressions on everyone's faces was heart-wrenching. And the hopelessness that was in this episode: all these doctors were unable to save one of their own. A chilling fact.

NEXT WEEK: Two teenage girls want to be tested for STDs. Luca witnesses a hit-and-run, and he takes the victim from the scene of the crime to the emergency room...kind of like when George Clooney saved that boy in the flood when the rain was pouring down and the boy was stuck in something like a sewer.

February 10, 2000

What a boring episode. The fact that I knew the ending made the episode all the more boring, and I can only give this episode 4 flushes. Even though we all knew the big surprise ending that no one could predict, I'll save that bit for last. It's Valentine's Day in the er. The episode starts on Valentine's morning and goes into night. I assume we're going for unity of time. Marc and Liz have plans, but when Marc bumps into Liz's mom in the er, the two talk, and before we know it Liz's mom is coming to dinner as is Marc's dad. Mom and dad hit it off famously at a karaoke bar, and we'll see if this relationship goes any further next week.

We finally see the human side to Romano this week when he operates on a dog. That's right, Romano brings his pet dog named Gretel to the operating room and cuddles the dog and does all sorts of other stupid human tricks that humans do to dogs. Very dumb, but possibly humanizing (don't you love the irony of Romano becoming human when we see him interact with a dog). And yes, Romano has a second dog named Hansel.

Other small tidbits this week: Dave and Jing-mei become very competitive in seeing who is the best doctor. I'm not sure if these two are supposed to be romantic...maybe, but I do not think they go well together. Dave is way too much of a goof ball for Jing-mei. Luca and Carole continue to bond as they tell two children that their parents just died. Abby learns that the er is not the maternity ward, and that some patients, particularly old and lonely ones, are better off not receiving life-saving treatments. Also, a momentary shot at the Valentine's Party showed Peter and Cleo flirting.

Now the big story. Lucy treats a law school student named Paul Sobriki. Paul has been having headaches for the past two days. He tells Lucy that he and his wife have been having difficulties and that there is an attacker who may be trying to hunt him down. One fellow student stops by to see how Paul is doing, but Paul almost attacks the friend. The friend shares that Paul was normal until a few months ago when he started accusing people of coming out to get him and became very paranoid in general. Lucy is constantly asking Carter for advice on this patient, but Carter continually dismisses Lucy. As in Carter is a real asshole and is going to feel guilty in the morning for how he treated Lucy. Maybe more guilty than Peter felt when Omar Epps committed suicide. Finally, the two realize that this kid is a schizophrenic. The day progresses into night, and it is now the Valentine's Party. Music is blasting when Carter goes to see how Paul is doing, and to see if psychology has examined him. Carter enters Paul's room and is attacked from behind. Paul stabs Carter with a surgical knife. Carter gets to have a very dramatic falling scene. He falls to the ground and sees Lucy lying on the floor, also stabbed. He says "Lucy" but his voice is barely audible due to his injury, and no one can hear him, because of the loud music. Fade out.

Note that Laura Innes who plays Kerry was not in this episode as she was directing it, but...
NEXT WEEK: Kerry comes on duty and finds Lucy and Carter stabbed. The entire er community comes together to see what happened and how.

It's official. er is no longer one of the best dramas on TV. I've polled all of the friends I have who are true TV buffs, and they all agree that this show has peaked and begun to decline. In my opinion, the only saving grace is Abby Lockheart. We last saw Abby helping Carole have her babies. Abby was a nurse. Apparently, Abby was only acting as a nurse b/c she needed the money. Now, she is a third year medical student in the er. She has a rough first day, but she'll be all right. However, Carole seems to be a bit jealous of Abby. Remember a few seasons back when Carole almost became a doctor? I think Abby is making Carole remember those good old days when she could have been a doctor.

What else happened this week? Liz's mom came to town. The two are very estranged, and Liz's mom does not even tell Liz that she's coming to town. Liz reads about it in the newspaper (mom is lecturing at the University of Chicago). But Liz hunts mom down and invites mom to stay at her place. Anything else? Not really. Marc played some basketball with Cleo and it seemed like the two of them were flirting, so I said to myself that Marc goes after all of Peter's girlfriends (first Liz and now Cleo) even though Cleo is not dating Peter and even though the Marc and Cleo did not really flirt. Peter was a good guy this episode. He helped a poor girl get pro bono facial surgery. Romano collapsed during surgery because he has the flu. Kerry left the er because she had the flu. Dave cannot decide who he wants to flirt with more Abby or Jing-mei. By the way, Jing- mei's role was significantly diminished this week. Luca played the typical hero this week. Is there going to be an episode where he isn't a hero? Lucy and Carter barely in the episode. Can I even stomach to write more about this episode? No.

CASTING NOTES: Maura Tierney of Newsradio origins joins the cast and opening credits of er as Abby Lockheart.
NEXT WEEK:A Valentine's Day episode in which Corday's mother meets Green's father. A Valentine's Day party in the er is delayed by an "unexpected occurrence" that puts two lives in danger...can we say Lucy and Carter get shot. Lucy dies! Sorry if I just ruined the ending.
