Chandler reads the joke and laughs but says that the joke was his. A big fight ensues and is finally resolved by Monica who says that they should both be embarrassed to have written such a sexist and unfunny joke. But the Playboy material goes on. The three girls are sitting and reading the magazine when Monica asks Rachel which of them (meaning Monica, Phoebe, or Rachel) she would have sex with. Rachel says she doesn't know. Monica says she doesn't know. Phoebe chooses Rachel. Monica gets very upset by this. Phoebe explains that she choose Rachel because Monica is so demanding. Monica says she is not demanding and Chandler quite amusingly confirms this. Phoebe then says maybe she would choose Monica because Rachel is a pushover. Phoebe has now insulted both girls and they both get so mad at Phoebe that they call her a flake...only she doesn't care, claiming that she wouldn't care because she is such a big flake. In the end, peace restores itself. Also this week, Joey needs a job. Since Janine left, Joey has been short on cash. He gets work at the coffee shop, but is fired when he closes down the shop so he can go to an audition. He gets his job back when Rachel asks Gunther to give him back the job.THE REAL PLAYBOY JOKE: Although Ross/Chandler's joke (I think it was Chandler's, because he is the joke man) was about a monkey who was a doctor, they do say that the joke was the first one published and that it came from the January 2000 edition. Here is the real first joke from Playboy, January 2000: Prince Charming walked dejectedly into a tavern. The bartender asked what the problem was. "I was riding through the Enchanted Forest," the prince began, "when suddenly I saw Snow White fast asleep on a bed of straw. The dwarf next to her told me that she has eaten a poisonous apple and could only be revived by a kiss from me. I gave her a peck on the cheek. Nothing. So I started making passionate love to her right there in the woods. Suddenly, she moaned, 'Oh yes, ohh yes.'" "That's great!" the bartender replied. "Then she's alive?" "Nah," the prince said, shrugging, "she was faking it." NEXT WEEK:Rerun January 6, 2000The episode was funny but very blah and lame. Monica & Chandler double date with Joey & Janine. The date is so successful that they all plan to get together the next night, but when the two couples go their separate ways, Janine intimates to Joey that she can't stand to see Monica & Chandler two nights in a row. She claims Chandler's personality is "blah!" and that Monica despite being very small is a very loud person. Joey makes up an excuse to Monica and Chandler about Janine not showing up for the next date, but they see Janine and realize that Joey is lying. Joey tells his friends the truth. They are upset, but they all go out on another date after which Janine says she had a great time. But when Janine and Joey reenter their apartment, she complains about Monica and Chandler. Monica overhears this and comes storming in to Joey's. The girls are angry at each other, but then forgive one other, and then fight again. In the end, Joey breaks up with Janine, and Elle MacPherson is no longer on Friends.Rachel buys a table from Pottery Barn for her and Phoebe's apartment. After buying the table, Rachel learns from Monica that Phoebe hates Pottery Barn because the store has so many commercialized goods that have no history behind them. Rachel lies to Phoebe about the table's history, but when Phoebe sees the table and other Pottery Barn furniture in a window display, she realizes that she loves Pottery Barn after all. NEXT WEEK: Playboy magazine publishes Ross's joke...only Chandler claims the joke is his. Phoebe causes conflict amongst Monica and Rachel. DecemberDecember 30, 1999RerunDecember 23, 1999RerunDecember 16, 1999This episode may have scored high on the laugh-meter, but it lost the real-to-life category. First, Monica and Ross celebrate Christmas? Let's remember that Jews don't buy Christmas trees. The second thing is to come later on. Story #1: Janine invites Joey to be on TV with her. She is going to be a dancer on Dick Clark's Rock n' Eve Special, and she asks Joey to be her partner. Monica and Ross come along because they are totally obsessed with the show. The special is taped, so keep in mind that it's still December. Anyway, Joey wants to kiss Janine, and he figures if he does it at fake midnight then he can chalk it up to the New Year if she doesn't like the kiss. The countdown begins and at 10,9,8,7,6,5, 4,3,2,1, "Cut!" is yelled, because the special cuts to Times Square. They never get to kiss. Back at the apartment, Janine tells Joey that she wanted to kiss him for the New Year, so the two kiss. And then they realize that they liked the kiss, so they do it all again. This is the second point of contention: when did chemistry enter the Joey-Janine relationship? As for Monica and Ross, they do a dance they call "The Routine" and make fools of themselves.Story#2: While Monica is out of the apartment, Chandler, Phoebe, and Rachel search for the presents Monica got them all. They find the gifts, but decide not to open them. Just then Monica comes in and tells Chandler what he will receive even though Chandler decided he didn't want to know. That's all.
