José Emilio Pacheco was born in Mexico City on 1939. His talent was recognized early, and while still in his twenties he was already keeping company with the great Spanish speaking poets of Latin America. Pacheco is a prolific perfectionist. In his singularity of vision and multiplicity of poetic forms, traditional and modern, Pacheco spans past and present in both Latin American and peninsular Spanish poetry. It is a glittering and giant technical achievement.
A short selection of Pacheco’s poetry, Signals from the Flames, was translated by Thomas Hoeksema and published by the Latin American Literary Review Press in 1980. Alastair Reid’s translation, Don’t Ask Me How the Time Goes By, was published by Columbia University Press in 1978. A chapbook version of Arbol entre dos muros—Tree Between Two Walls, translated by Edward Dorn and Gordon Brotherston—appeared from Black Sparrow Press in 1969. An ark for the next millennium, translated by Margaret Sayers Peden was published in 1993, and City of memory and other poems, translated by Cynthia Steele and David Lauer in 1997.
