Chapter 4

Lance stared at the phone in his room, wondering whether or not he should pick up the phone and call Elisa. Taylor had cajoled him into considering the idea, insisting that he and Elisa go with her and Justin.

"Just call her, Lance!" Taylor hissed, coming back into the room with a soda. She sat Indian-style on the bed next to him.

"What do I say? How do you ask your friend out on a date?" He asked, confused.

"Like this, 'Elisa you want to go catch a movie with me, Taylor, and Justin?' See? Piece of cake!"

"Maybe for you, you aren't the one who has to ask her," Lance commented dryly.

"Okay, okay, but just go ahead! The worst she could do is say no, and that wouldn't be such a bad thing at this stage would it? It's just the movies!"

"Alright, alright." He grudgingly agreed, picking up the telephone and dialing Elisa's number. She picked up after two rings.

"Hello?" She asked, and Lance's heart skipped a nervous beat.

"Elisa? Hey, it's Lance." He answered, feeling very awkward.

"Hey, Lance!" She greeted him. "What's up?"

"Well, I'm in San Jose staying with a couple of friends and I er- wanted er- to know," He stuttered.

"Yes?" She asked, gently urging him on.

"Willyougotothemovieswithme?" He asked, all of the words jumbling into one incoherent sound. Taylor's face was flushed from trying to hold in her laughter. Lance ignored her.

She laughed, "sure. What time?"

"Uh, three, if that's ok?"

"Yeah, that's great. I have a basketball game afterwards if you and you're friends want to come." She offered.

"That'd be awesome." Lance answered, "we'll pick you up at three alright?"

"Okay, bye!" Lance hung up the phone, feeling like an enormous weight had just been taken off of his chest. Taylor now dissolved into a fit of giggles, mimicking his question.

"Shut up," He answered, trying to ignore her, but her good mood was infectious and he ended up laughing at his foolish behavior.

"Hey, Mika." Daniel Watson greeted his younger sister as she walked into the restaurant.

"Hi, Danny." She greeted him, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "What's up?"

"Nothing. It looks like a pretty slow day today," Danny commented.

"Slow day?" Mika repeated, looking at the loads of people already seated and eating.

"Yeah, we haven't had a line yet," Danny said with a shrug.

"Cool. I'll be in my office okay?" He nodded, and she went inside of her office, setting down her purse on her chair and opening the blinds. She sighed at the bright and sunny day outside, and turned away so she wouldn't decide on leaving early to be with Josh.

His questions bothered her. Her eyebrows furrowed as she remembered how he had asked her question after question about Brian. They were only friends, for goodness' sake! She shook her head, I'm delusional, Josh isn't jealous of Brian. He knows that we're just friends, She thought, grinning at her own insecurities.

"So, is Josh here?" Danny asked, knocking on her door and letting himself in.

"Who told you that?" She asked, surprised that he already knew.

"Josh did."

"What do you mean?" She asked, confused.

"Well, the guy is standing in the lobby, it would be rude not to talk to him," Danny said with a laugh.

"He's here?"

"Yeah. Go on and take the day off, be with your boyfriend," Danny told her.

"I couldn't do that to you, Danny. It's unfair, you're never absent from work." Mikayla argued.

"Don't argue with me, Mika. I know how it is to be in love," His eyes looked pained for a moment, but cleared up, "go on, you work as hard as I do."

Mikayla knew there was no use arguing with him. "Thanks, Danny. You're the best brother in the entire world." She answered, giving him a hug.

"It's only because I've got the best sister in the world," Danny replied, grinning.

"Wait, so what are we seeing?" Justin asked again, his eyes on the road ahead of him.

"How about the new Bruce Willis movie?" Lance suggested.

"Sweet." Justin answered. His cellphone rang again. "Tay, could you answer that, please?"

"Sure." She picked up the phone. "hello?"

The same annoying giggly voice giggled into the cell. "Is Justin there?"

"Let me guess - Tracy?"

"Yeah! How'd you know?" The voice giggled cluelessly.

"Hold on, here's Justin." She handed the phone to Justin, refusing to look at him. How many times a day did the chit call him? She glanced out of the window at the trees they passed, ignoring the worry that nagged at her.

Lance was, on the other hand, thinking more about Elisa than Justin's phone call from Tracy. He sat in the back seat, wondering how he was going to ask her out. The phone call earlier was unlike any phone call he'd ever had with her. Usually, it was very easy to talk to her, but then again that had been when he thought that he'd be content just thinking of her as a friend. She was standing outside of her apartment complex, waiting for them, when Justin arrived. Lance smirked when she almost wiped out on the skateboard she was riding, while several children watched her.

"Good one, Elisa," He joked, opening his window. She waved and handed the skateboard back to one of the kids before she went over to the car and got in.

"Hey everyone," She said, her cheeks slightly flushed.

"Hey," Justin greeted her, ending his call on the call phone.

"Hey, Elisa," Taylor said, more enthusiastically than Justin.

"How have you been?" Lance asked her. She was always smiling or her green eyes were always twinkling, he noticed yet again, like nothing in this world could bring her down.

"Great. Glad for the break?" She asked him.

"Oh, definitely." He answered, "it's been a long time since we just got to relax."

She nodded understandingly. "What movie are we all going to go see?"

"The new Bruce Willis one, if that's okay," He asked.

"Neat!" She answered. Justin pulled into the movie theatre a couple of moments later, and Lance quickly put on a baseball cap and dark sunglasses.

"Afraid you'll get mobbed, Bass?" Elisa teased, pronouncing his last name 'Base'.

"Of course!" He grinned. "And my last name's not 'Base'."

"Then why do they call a bass guitar a 'base guitar'? They couldn't call it a bass guitar like the fish." Elisa pointed out.

"So you're saying I'm a fish?"

"No you're a bass guitar," She quipped, getting out of the car.

"Hey, there." Mikayla said, smiling as she walked into the reception area of the restaurant.

"Hey," JC answered, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Did Danny give you the day off like I begged him to?"

Mikayla laughed, "yeah. Where do you want to go?"

"How about you just stay at home with me?" He suggested, "we can watch a movie on tv," He lowered his lips to her neck, "or do something else." He murmured.

"Woah, hold on." Mikayla said, pushing him away slightly. "There are people watching," She hissed, making him chuckle.

"I don't care anymore." He told her honestly, giving her a kiss.

"Let's go," She said, smiling.

"Man so much traffic," Chris complained, resting his head on his arm, which was propped up on the door.

"It's only a little traffic," Joey reasoned.

"This is only a little traffic?" Chris asked, motioning towards the sea of cars that only moved slightly every green light. "you're only saying that because you're the one who wanted to go out." He pointed out.

"So?" Joey asked defensively, "they've got those neat Superman action figures at Toys R Us. I figured I'd get one for my sister's kid while we're here."

"I don’t get what it is with your family and Superman," Chris said with a sigh, feeling bored.

"He's awesome!" Joey insisted. "Yes!" He yipped happily when the line started to move. They pulled into the Toys R Us parking lot several moments later, which was also packed full of cars.

"There's a spot!" Chris said, pointing at the only open parking space in the entire lot. Joey nodded and quickly pulled into it, causing a red sports car to honk its horn loudly at them. A young woman popped her head out of the front passenger seat window, yelling out curse words that made Chris cringe slightly then grin. "Same to you, lady!" He yelled out, sticking out this tongue. The woman in the driver's seat waved her fist at him through her open window and then the two sped away. "Wow, weird people, huh?" Chris asked.

"Well, we did take their spot," Joey said with a shrug.

"I guess, but oh well. Let's get the toys, man?" Chris asked, "hopefully we won't get mobbed here."
