Bill Poole's Trip to the
Republic of South Africa
(I'm not sure what kinda bird that is, I saw them around town)

Day 12
Tuesday, 10-Nov-98

Got up and checked the email, found a note from an administrator back home saying "the project is cancelled, pack up and come home". 'Course by the time I read it, its midnight in AZ so I couldn't get clarification...just to make sure I don't miss any chances, I start trying to plan the tour I'll take when I get done with work.

Did the usual work at the offices.

After a flurry of confusing emails and phone calls we finally arrive at the answer. I work thru friday, then I'm on my own time. (Time to play tourist!) I'll join in a rifle match saturday!

It was actually kinda depressing, I hate it when my plans get changed, and I've really enjoyed working here. A 15 minute walk to and from work, meeting all kindsa nice people etc etc.

I had dinner (alone, I hate that) at a restaurant called MacRibs (isn't that a Mcdonalds sandwich?) Grilled Calimari "starter" (appetizer) and Ribs!

The book store here are full of magazines and books, nearly every title that is common in an American book store is common here, although marked up a little. Also a bunch of british rags one cannot get easily at home and Some local magazines. I picked up local magazines on shooting (Magnum), trucks (Bakkie) and electronics/cellular phones.

According to my new friends, Marijuana is grown widely in rural areas and smoked in the cities and is not looked upon as harshly as in the US. He said if you are 5 minutes from population, you are 6 minutes from a place to buy it here. I have not seen or smelled any yet.

One'a my friends said interest rate for home loans is like 24%!! Geez it might be cheaper to get several $50,000 limit Visa cards and charge it!

There's Car in the mall on display, its a Ferrari I think, 1.8 MILLION Rand! about $320,000!!!! You can buy a raffle ticket to win it for 50 rand or about $9! I did not. I think is part of an advertizing gimmick from a beer company. There a several luxury car dealerships here in Sandton. The VERY expensive cars are less hijacking risk than the VW Golf since they're so rare they stand out.

I've been listening to a radio at the location where the test equipment is mounted. Radio Jacaranda 94.2 FM http://www.jacarandafm.com, fully bilingual they switch from English to Afrikaans in mid sentence and play a mix of US/English oldies, rock, country and some afrikaans. Jacaranda is a non-indigenous tree with purple flowers.

I don't watch much TV, CNN is getting real old, but there are sports channels with Cricket and rugby and channels with shows in Afrikaans, Zulu and other languages.
