Bill Poole's Trip to the
Republic of South Africa
Parking lot at Kyalami (friday's trip) convention center, not the thatched roof and lightning rods!

Day 13
Wednesday, 11-Nov-98

Article in the paper today told about a home-owner who got up in the morning to find his 3 big bull terrier dogs covered in blood, he checked them and none of them was injured from a fight, so he went outside and found the torn-up corpse of a burglar who had climbed the security fence, apparently, based on the tools he had with him, to steal a car. Never mind the Smith & Wesson, beware of the dogs.

I got invited to dinner at the home of the friends of a co-worker. They are a middle class white family, but they have "adopted" an older black gentleman, much the same way one adopts a stray cat. He's been living in the shed for years, even moved from Pretoria to Jo'burg with them. Doesn't work, gets leftovers to eat, sometimes disappears for weeks at a time....They speak to him in Afrikaans, native tongue to none of them.

The dinner conversation covered crime and medical care here....apparently the government hospitals are not real nice, but the private ones are like the US. One MUST carry ones medical insurance card so that you get taken to the right place in the event of an accident.

Signed up for a budget 3-day tour of Kruger Park for the week I'm off work.

Other than that, usual day at the offices.
